Lost Keys - Next Steps

2017 Rav4. Dad lost them somewhere. Its not a smart key, its something like this (forgot the technical term)

Image

My question was, can he order some aftermarket key from the internet and have this cut by a hardware store? I know aftermarket keys used to come with programming instructions back in 2009.

Should we tell insurance we lost the keys? If anyone picks these keys up where it was most likely dropped, they will easily have access to the car to steal away.

No you don't need to tell insurance. Insurance will cover you if someone somehow steals your car, no matter what.

With the 4 million rav4's on the road, it will be a little difficult to figure out a key someone found to match it with your car, Goodluck with that. Unless he dropped it on the driveway to your house and someone picked it up, but it would have probably been stolen by now.

I would contact the dealer or Google to see if you can erase the transponder from the vehicles memory. The key would be useless in arm/disarming the car and possibly starting it if it concerns you.

You could have a dealer reprogram them, and get rid of the old ones programmed in it if your that worried. Physical key would have to be rekeyed if your worried about actual entrance to the vehicle...

Hi,

Does he still have the key code to give to Toyota to cut a new key that fits the ignition? Otherwise he's going to have to get a new ignition tumbler & keys or ignition tumbler, door tumblers & keys.

Some locksmith does the cutting and programming. Dealership runs a racket for these. 3 times the price.

Call a locksmith that specializes in cars (an automotive locksmith). With a VIN and proof of ownership they should be able to look up the key code and cut you a new key. I don't know if the RAV4 in question has a transponder key but, if it does, they can also program it. Get two copies made and lock one away in a box.

Alternative is a dealer but they usually just use a good locksmith that they work with and it will cost more.

If Toyota is still the same as quite a few years ago the key code is stamped onto the passenger front door lock cylinder (have to get the cylinder pulled from the door to check it). Check with the dealer and they can tell you.
People will believe what they want to believe whether fact or fiction.
'tis most frustrating when they aren't open to see and/or learn which is which.

Good news is he found the key. Some good guy turned them in at his work.

And yes, he had the key code to give to Toyota. It's metal stamped into a keychain with your 2nd set of keys.
