Lowe's Canada announces the closure of 34 underperforming stores across Canada (26 Ronas, 6 Lowe's, & 2 Reno-Depot)

List of stores is in the link below:

OUCHERVILLE, QC , Nov. 20, 2019 /CNW Telbec/ - Following a detailed strategic review of its operations, Lowe's Canada is announcing the following actions to improve performance and better position itself for the future:

Closing 34 underperforming stores to optimize its network;
Undertaking a process to simplify multiple store banners to drive efficiency and reduce operational complexity;
Reorganizing the corporate support structure across the country to better support store and customer needs; and
Rationalizing the product assortment to present a more coordinated offering to Canadian customers.
"While making decisions that impact our associates and their families is never easy, closing underperforming stores is a necessary step in our plan to ensure the long-term stability and growth of our Canadian business," declared Tony Cioffi , Interim President of Lowe's Canada . "We are taking decisive action to build a healthy business which will provide us with the flexibility to reinvest in our future growth. This includes having a clear strategy for our banners, built on the strength of our Lowe's, RONA and Reno-Depot brands. It also means investing in our omnichannel and supply chain capabilities, our web platforms, and our existing corporate stores and affiliated dealer network. Our objective continues to be providing our Canadian customers with the right products and the best service and value across every channel, for the long term."

The employees affected by these changes will be supported throughout the transition. Given the existing need for personnel throughout the Lowe's Canada network, eligible employees will be offered the opportunity to transfer to a nearby store.

Lowe's Canada will continue serving customers from markets affected by the closures via other corporate and affiliated dealer stores from its network, as well as its online offering and parcel delivery service.

Major home improvement retailer Lowe's has announced it's closing 34 "under performing" stores across the country.

The company says the changes will "optimize its network" and help "drive efficiency."

9 stores will close in Ontario, including five in the GTA. The company will close Rona locations in Mississauga, Oshawa, and Ajax, as well as a Lowe's in Etobicoke, and a Reno-Depot in Aurora.
List of Rona stores being closed in Quebec:

RONA Rivière-des-Prairies (Store #43250)
9200, boulevard Maurice-Duplessis, Montréal

RONA Ste-Clotilde (Store #44000)
335, Route 209, Sainte-Clotilde-de-Chateauguay

RONA Iberville (Store #44110)
870, boulevard d’Iberville, Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu

RONA L’Assomption (Store #44070)
723, boulevard L’Ange-Gardien, L’Assomption

RONA Granby Moeller (Store #44060)
788, rue Moeller, Grandby

RONA Ste-Rose (Store #44040)
134, boulevard Sainte-Rose, Laval

RONA Rouyn-Noranda (Store #43270)
1200, rue Mantha, Rouyn-Noranda

RONA Ange-Gardien (Store #43070)
194, rue Principale, Ange-Gardien

RONA Saint-Elzéar (Store #43290)
100, rue du Parc Industriel, Saint Elzéar

Stores will close at the end of January.

It's not clear how many people might lose their jobs, but the company says "eligible employees will be offered the opportunity to transfer to a nearby store."

Lowe's also plans on restructuring corporate staff.

The affect GTA stores include:

Lowe's Etobicoke - North 48 Lowe's Place

RONA Mississauga Rockwood Mall 4141 Dixie Road

Totally unsurprised that one of the locations they're closing is the Rona in Cambridge, ON. They built a Lowe's literally across the street from it, in a move I never understood. Lowe's blows.

I know its harsh to say, but I'm also was waiting for the liquidation sales but they might just move inventory to another store. Hopefully the store staff will be ok, the writings been on the wall for some time now.

I believe Rona hasn’t been acquired by Lowe’s yet when they built that Lowe’s location.

But it was a stupid move considering Rona (a superstore), Home Depot and a huge Canadian Tire were already there within a minute of each other!

I don’t think I’ve ever seen 4 such stores so close to each other.

Those two were the former "Millwork" mom-and-pop hardware stores that were bought up by Rona maybe a year before Lowe's bought Rona itself. Since Rona bought them they gradually phased in the Rona name and phased out the Millwork branding.

The Ajax Millwork store is a stone's throw away from the Pickering Lowe's store (which was a Sam's Club before that!). The only thing Millwork had going for it vs the Goliath next door was the drive-through lumber yard, or if you wanted to grab something small in a hurry and didn't want to bother wandering through Home Depot, Lowe's, or Crappy's to find it. Place was never busy.

Up in Ottawa there is a similar situation along Hunt Club
A big Cdn Tire & a Rona Home & Garden Centre at Merivale
And a Giant Lowes Home & Garden 2 blocks to the east
The local Home Depot is under 5 Kms away
All are thriving and seem to cater to different needs (more Specialized)
Rona began in Quebec as a lumber store
And it definitely still seems to hold its own in that field in the Ottawa region
Definitely more Warehouse than idea Centre
Not much there in the way of Appliances, Blinds, Decor etc
Very much hard core ... Lumber, Plywood, Drywall, Bricks, Fences, etc
Their lot is always filled with Contractor Trucks & Trailers buying on a large scale

This is round 2 of closures;
Nov 2018 - 24 Rona and 1 Reno Depot
Nov 2019 - 26 Rona and 2 Reno Depot

The writing was in the sky when they acquired Rona. The deal almost fell through solely because they wanted the stores but didn't want to be stuck with Rona's/Reno Depot's employees which are mostly UNIONIZED garbage.

The multi-year plan is in full effect...round 3 Nov 2020?

The Lowes that's closing in Etobicoke is the north location that is bordered by the 401 and Islington (former Labatt's brewery property) . That store is nowhere near as busy as the Etobicoke South store. It was nice having it around in case the Etobicoke South store didn't have stock.

I'm not surprised the Rona Rockwood Mall location in Mississauga is closing. There is a full Rona store within 5km / 8 minutes (city driving) from Rockwood Mall. The Rockwood mall store is very small and had no chance of expansion with a Winners as a tenant in the other half of the building. I only went to this location a few times since they are slightly closer to me.

Those other 2 "smaller stores" closed down when Lowes bought out Rona in 2016

The Rona at Eglinton and Winston Churchill downsized dramatically a few years ago. I think it was on the chopping block at one point but it’s still around. When I first moved here it was a Revy.

I would have thought it would do better considering it’s the only big box diy store in a sea of a gazillion homes.
