A couple thermostats are half price for anyone in the market or doing reno's. Not sure how they stack up again Nest but prices seem good. Not an exhaustive list, there may be others.

Which brand is the best? Do I have to use the same brand as my current one (traditional)?

Check reviews.

You'll need to confirm compatibility with your wiring.

I'm a big fan of Ecobee. Nest is also great.

Neither of those are on sale lol

Make sure to check compatibility before purchasing any smart thermostat.

My current t-stat is a Ecobee I got on clearance from Costo a few years back. Before that I took advantage of the $100 credit rebate from Enbridge and got the Honeywell Lyric which worked great for many years.

In terms of required wiring all these smart wifi thermostats require 5 wire because it needs constant power. If you don't have 5 wires but 4 there are adapters you can buy that you easily connect up on the side where your furnace is in the basement that will make your 4 wire setup work. My Ecobee came with this 4 wire to 5 adapter otherwise when I had my Honeywell I bought this off someone on kijiji for $10.

The other alternative is you can run a single wire from your furnace to your t-stat or new 5 wire harness for $25-30. I would just get the adapter and call it a day as you get full functionality from your t-stat and furnace.

Just a heads up, make sure you confirm the thermostat is compatible. I learned this the hard way. My new condo has a 120v fan coil unit, so only very select thermostats will work. Unfortunately I don't think any smart/wifi or programmable thermostats exist for my setup. Wish I can get one of these!

Yes, I’ve never come across a smart thermostat compatible with my fan coil system for my condo. I wish they made them. I keep monitoring threads like this one in case someone ever makes a reference to one.

Edit, I think I found one: https://www.mbtek.com/products/wifi-fan ... 9348320433

Oh nice find! I might actually buy this... just need to first find reviews. Is MBtek legit?

Edit: Nevermind, they are not legit: https://bradecontrols.en.alibaba.com/pr ... ostat.html
