I hope folks do not impulsively go out and buy softeners just because they are on sale. Also, take into consideration, the installation of the machine. If you know what you are doing, it will take approx 2 hours, depending how close you are to the water main in your basement.

Make sure your water is hard which is approx 8 gpg and up. If you do not know the hardness of your water, here is a general rule of thumb.

Lake water: Typically 4 - 7 gpg moderate - Do not need softener
Well Water: Typically 8 gpg and up. It could be municipal wells too - Tolerable hardness up to 10 gpg unless you have dry skin

It is best to call your town water treatment department to determine hardness of water. Some towns mix well and lake water. If you call a Water treatment company, be prepared to get some extreme pitches. I am not suggesting all are the same. Just do your homework.

Disclosure: I used to be in the water treatment business back in the 80's and 90's. Not anymore. I do not profit monetarily or otherwise. I would rather help people make informed decisions. There are a ton of high pressure and non-ethical companies out there who wouldn't think twice about selling their old grandmother $10,000 in equipment, even when not needed.
