Lowney's Bridge Mixture Crisis (downgrade of quality)

Amid all the crises facing the world right now, Canadians are confronted with one of the most challenging and disappointing developments in our history. Hershey Canada, importer of the classic Bridge Mixture candy, has changed the formulation beyond all recognition.

Bridge Mixture for years contained a melange of chocolate covered mints, caramels, peanuts, raisins and jellies. Now the caramels, mints and jellies have been removed. Customers who have purchased the new formulation are complaining that the bag now contains mostly chocolate covered peanuts.

This is a sneaky and utterly disappointing move. Hershey's has made a big deal of the fact that the bags are still the same size as before ("NEW PACKAGING: STILL 290g") knowing that consumers expect redesigns to mean smaller packages. But what Hershey's has actually done is cut costs by getting rid of the more expensive candies, like the jellies, and filling the bag with cheaper ones.

Bridge Mixture was long a family favourite in our home. We won't be purchasing it anymore.

If that is true, it is a travesty. If they remove those things, which were always my favourite parts, it is not Bridge Mix. However, I haven't actually eaten any Bridge Mix in many years. An old fashioned treat that fell by the wayside as we moved on to other chocolate treats.

True Confession Time: As a kid I worked in a store as a stockboy and craved chocolate. You could open the little yellow Bridge Mix box and steal a piece that no-one would notice was missing. (turning red now). You could eat quite a bit of candy that way!

This is considered a crisis?

Switch to another brand.

I never liked bridge mix
Probably this aversion was fixed at a young age 'cause me unsophisticated palette didn't enjoy chocolate covered mints & jellies
Maybe you can improvise your own buying the varieties separately mixing them in a bowl

There used to be a "compare to Bridge mix" alternative at Winners/Marshall's near the cash area, but I have not seen that in a while.
It's tough to find an alternative at a fair price.

I think OP is being intentionally overdramatic for comedic effect. That said, there isn't an alternative. Brach's sells Bridge Mix in the US but the mix is a little different.

Bridge Mixture is a weird, niche product that I'm surprised didn't disappear long ago. Similar to Cherry Blossoms, the packaging has remained largely the same for decades, there's no advertising and Hershey's still uses the Lowney branding.

Old ingredient list: (real apple juice concentrate, real fruit juice concentrate and all...)

New ingredient list: (notice peanuts now at top of list!)

I thought OP was pretty funny and summed up this tragedy well.

FWIW my favorite "chocolate" bar is Eat More. How that is still being made is beyond me.

Well it's really no different than what they did to Pot of Gold chocolates and was done to Quality Street chocolates. Neither of those bare much resemblance to the originals. Pot of Gold particularly.

Quality street chocolates gets credit for *at least* keeping a real hazelnut piece in one of their chocolate selections and not simply replacing it with hazelnut flavouring.
(that's my last breath of defence, lol)

The ingredients list literally states "may contain cherries" ==> it is made of scrap chocolates/would be garbage.

Probably really economical to make.

I bought a Pot of Gold for the 1st time in decades last Xmas & wow it was crap. There used to be cherries, coconut, nuts, chewy caramels, now it is all soft caramels & cremes.

I do not mind if they pare the Bridge Mix down to peanuts & raisins, to be honest, but why bother when they already have a Glossettes brand they could leverage?

Somewhat thankful they did not go the other way & make it 100% jellies, mints & cremes.

They have to bring back individual 50-60g boxes if the brand is going to live.

A while back I bought a box of Black Magic for the nostalgia and it was also very different than I remember. Ganong's and Back Magic were THE boxed chocolates we had growing up. They came in for Christmas with a seasonal cellophane banner, at the store where I worked. My job was to remove it and tape on a Valentine's Day banner for any unsold stock. We also had Easter banners to fall back on. So the customer always had the (false) impression of fresh stock.

I think this was the first year we did not have Quality Street in the house, so I can't judge the allegations others are making that this brand has been debased as well.

We have moved upscale a bit with our local chocolatier (Walker's) and European brands from Costco and others. We also made a trip to Belgium before COVID and went crazy with the chocolate culture there. We loved the Leonidas factory chocolate that is sold throughout the country in their own shops. They had a coffee bar with a promo where you buy a coffee drink with a chocolate of your choosing on the side. The variety of fresh product seemed infinite. Now that is a real "pick-me-up" when you travelling.

My daughter gave me a large box of Costco's Belgian chocolates for Christmas. They were all creams and disgustingly sweet. Even the chocolate was cheap quality. After trying a few, I threw the rest of them out. OTOH, one of my kids gave me a 2# box of Purdy's - I ate every last one of them.

We had the same disappointment with the Costco Belgian this year. The style of the package made me hope they were Leonidas' and we got two boxes on markdown. What a letdown! My wife quickly gave up and I was left to finish off first box, but only after every other bit of chocolate in our house was gone. And we were happy for an opportunity to regift the second box! The low price should have been warning.

I can confirm that the so-called new and improved Bridge Mixture is new and improved for Hershey's bottom line. The new product is awful, in fact it's disgusting. Should we really be surprised afterall it's Hershey's!! I ate three or four of the new product and threw the rest in the garbage. I don't even know what sort of concoction is in the new product but it's absolutely awful. I've been buying Bridge Mixture for 40 years but I'll never buy it again!!

Please DO let us know if you can find an alternative! Hopefully not an expensive one.
