MA/PhD Econ at UofT

Hello!

I am applying to the MA/PhD stream at UofT. I have scored 4.5 Writing (80th percentile), 160 Verbal (84th percentile) and 170 Math (98th percentile) on my GRE. I have good references. My all-time GPA is 92% (equivalent A+) and 94% in my last year of studies.

My only concern is that I have graduated with a Bachelor of Business Administration degree, and a minor in Economics. Although I do have a bunch of extra econ classes, it only stayed a minor. I also have 4 Math courses (only A+) as I was an International Math Olympic (which sadly enough the UofT application package did not give me a chance to mention). Finally, I am a PR in Canada.

Do you guys think the Econ minor rather than major will hurt my chances?

I am really hoping for the PhD stream because I need the funding :)

Thank you!

I am not too knowledgeable about U of T specifically but generally speaking graduate economics programs generally require that you have a solid foundation in mathematics (which you seem to have) and at minimum intermediate economics courses. It is important to realize that research experience is very valuable to grad schools, you do not have to be an economics major but it would help helpful if you have solid recommendation letters and research experience, it is key.

thanks for the reply

they never asked for research experience. I assume it is because I am applying to the MA first. Hope it's this, god forbid I missed something on the application page :)
