[Apple] Mac mini refurb (Oct 2014) 499$

Just noticed the Mac mini launched in Oct 2014 is now available refurbished. As always it won't last long.

One big note of caution, the ram is NOT upgradeable. As I recall it is soldered on.

It has been available for the last couple of weeks. The price was $469 until this week's adjustment of prices because of the weak dollar.

I remember back then, when the 2012 Mac mini was $600 and the refurb was $469, it was a big saving.

If you want a mac mini 2014, base version, you could also get it on Staples brand new for $550, before they adjust their price:

Apple refurbs are like new, but if you like the fancy packaging, avoid shipping time and easy return, it might worth the $50

The new Mac Mini is a huge step back in terms of "upgradability". Just hate to see Apple doing this as the only reason is money grab.

no upgrade option and same size as before. What's the point to get this one?

I'm really disappointed with the Mini.

I remember trying out a new one at Future Shop and it wasn't slow but it wasn't fast either, and with just iTunes and Safari open, it had used all of its physical RAM and was on VRAM.

My old Macs felt like they could be used for years and years and still be usable (and my Macbook was used for at least 8 years), but this thing feels like it'll be obsolete the next time Chrome runs an update.

This is probably the one exception. Because the 2014 model is such a bad buy compared to the 2012 model, it hasn't sold out for weeks since it became available on the refurb. store. And the $499 price makes it even worst compared to a week ago when it was still $469.

It's been probably around 2 months since the stock of 2012 refurbs have dried up. I haven't gotten any refurb.me or refurbtracker notifications as far as I can remember. But I do get notifications weekly on 2014 models.

They honestly need to make the ram upgradeable again. Its a shame they are doing this, as my current Mac Mini (2012) my be my last Apple computer.

I would also like to see some kind of easy upgradeable drive, the 2012 wasn't that hard, but you do worry about breaking something. I would even settle just for access to a msata or pcie slot for that purpose.
