Mac: WD External HD - empty trash

I recently switched to Mac from PC. I was using a Western Digital 1TB hard drive with my PC. I didn't want to format the hd, so I MacFUSE to be able to use the hd like before.

However, I noticed that when I delete files off the hard drive, it doesn't clear up any space since the files end up in my trash. When i click empty trash (even when holding option), my Mac crashes and tells me to hold down the power button to restart. When I unplug the hard drive, the files (like 5000) no longer appear in the trash.

Is there any workarounds this problem so I wouldn't have to erase everything off my hard drive? Thanks!

I just had to figure this out on my 2TB WD Ext. drive. (I'm using PC though so I don't know if this will be much help you) but after right clicking on the drive from "my computer" and selecting Properties there is a button for 'DISK CLEANUP' which allowed me to empty a recycle bin that isn't visible by just opening the drive to view the folders.

HTH!
Caveat emptor.
