Not many cheap Marriott hotel these days. Four Points YEG airport was around $100/night and that was the lowest I can find.

Such promotions targeted at loyalty bookings are mostly BS, as they give you a false sense of saving money. You are almost always better off shopping around -- whether it be aggregators, membership pricing, different hotel chains, or so on. Most of these loyalty programs are so watered down these days that your "elite status" and higher-price bookings barely get you a couple of bottles of water and some ego massage when you check in. Not worth blowing thousands of dollars!

As an example, when I booked a recent Marriott reservation for Niagara falls, CAA rate was $106. Priceline "express deal" was $140, and regular rate was $156. A couple of months ago, we got a Hilton in NY for 50% on price line express deal, while membership/CAA discounts would be barely 10% off. Similarly, while travelling to Delhi, the only airport hotel was Holiday inn, while for others you need to get out. If you start chasing Marriott loyalty, first you will pay through your nose. And second your options will never be optimal.

If you look at this offer's fine-print:
Non-Qualifying Rates are those booked using the following methods:
i. The guest room was booked through a tour operator, online travel channel or other third-party channel including, without limitation, expedia.com, hotwire.com, priceline.com, orbitz.com, booking.com, travelocity.com; or
ii. The guest room was booked at a group rate as part of an event, meeting, conference or organized tour, and the Member does not directly pay the Participating Property for such room; or
iii. The guest room was booked at a tour operator, wholesaler, or crew room rate or package including, without limitation, organized tours or package bookings; or
iv. The guest room was complimentary; or
v. A voucher or third-party award was redeemed for the guest room.
Yeah, no thanks!

I had platinum status with Starwood for a few years before they got swallowed up by Marriott. Almost always got upgraded, lounges were not crowded, food was good. It felt special.
Now hotels and airlines are creating so many "elite" members that everyone is elite. Heck, in the US you can have marriott platinum just for having their credit card. when everyone's elite, nobody's elite. hotels are full of elite members and they all want upgrades. they all pack the lounges for free food and booze. it has become a nightmare. i'm not saying that other chains are better. they're all bad.
whereas it used to be worth trying to get status, today it isn't. if you travel for work and earn it organically then sure. go for it. but in the past i would have seen this offer for double nights and i would have used it to the maximum possible. now i won't even bother.

No. it means the paid night counts towards status and you get status per year based on nights stay. So if you're staying for 10nights, you get 20 nights towards status. 25 nights get you Gold status. Anyways, status is really worth nothing these days as the hotels don't really upgrade anymore (unless you're Ambassador status).

Corporate rates or CAA should still be eligible for the bonus nights so not sure what the issue is?

Status at Marriott isn’t as great as it used to be but you still get extra bonus points, lounge access, free breakfast and more. You’ll also be eligible for an upgrade often so it works out to your advantage.

Over the past three years having platinum status, I have always been upgraded to a suite on every stay and often got a welcome gift of a bottle of wine, chocolates or something on arrival, so I guess ymmv. The lounge access and free breakfasts in the restaurant have been nice, although how nice depends on the hotel.

I always book the cheapest room/rate btw, and I've been upgraded to suites that go for over $1000/night.

I've been Platinum the last few years. I've never gotten an upgrade to a suite and I've never even been able to use my Suite Night upgrades to get one. Part of it is that I usually stay at cheaper hotels that don't have suites, but when I do try and use the upgrades they say there's no room, even when there are rooms bookable. I have gotten minor upgrades on some occasions, but not always. This is all in the US and Canada, I know Asia is far better for upgrades.

Breakfast, on the other hand, is a fantastic perk for Platinum when I stay at a full-service hotel.

If you're staying a couple of weeks over this promo, then combined with a credit card it's enough to get to close to Platinum, it might be worth prioritizing staying at a Marriott. But it's not worth a mattress run, you're better off saving that money and paying for breakfast.

Wedding group blocks and conference rates may be eligible too depending on how the organizer set it up

I have found as gold member I got the best upgrades depending on time of day I check in actually. And even better when it's a location I frequent and remember front staff names (even if they obviously don't remember mine)

This year am platinum! same strategy should work out for perks
If I robbed the place I would be out by now....
