Marriott rewards used to be great, but their hotel points have been inflated so much these days. It's ridiculous.

i think your calculation is wrong.

if you buy 100k points for $1250 USD, you get a 45% bonus so 145k points.

1250/145000=0.00862 per point. in CAD, that's about 0.012 so not too bad.

Sheraton Wall Center Vancouver can easily run 60-70k points if not more. so that comes out to $720 or more. cash rates are usually lower.

two very important things to remember when buying points:
- check the cash vs points price for the hotel and nights you want to stay and do the math. don't forget that you earn points on cash stays.
- if you do buy points, use them ASAP. they will never go up in value.

let me math it out for you, base is $1.250 USD per point.. 45% bonus is $0.862 ($1.25 / 1.45x bonus)

it'd be nice to mention that 1.25 cent USD is the normal price before promo in your first comment. I thought that's the effective cost after promo too..

so I wrote "1250/145000=0.00862 per point" and then you wrote exactly the same thing. Thanks for "mathing it out" for me.

Also consider, when paying with points no local taxes are charged. Often it is cheaper to book a last minute room with points than the posted room rate with cash.

Wondering if they will offer their 20% off Marriott gift card again?

This is better than buying points.

But they do now charge tax (GST, PST, HST) when buying points in Canada. They didn't up until a few months ago.
