Does anyone know if I use the Bonvoy Amex to purchase these gift cards you get $5 points per USD or just the normal $2?

If Marriott declares bankruptcy, i wonder if the gift cards would still be honored?

If Marriott declares bankruptcy, IHG, Hilton, Hyatt, Best Western, and others won't be far behind.

What if all major hotel chains, airlines, car rentals, cruiselines, etc., all declare bankruptcy?

5

You will earn five (5) Marriott Bonvoy points from American Express for every $1 of eligible purchases (less credits and returns) charged on your Marriott Bonvoy American Express Card when charged directly with participating Marriott Bonvoy properties, standalone Marriott Bonvoy retail establishments, and Marriott branded online stores (including online purchases of Marriott Bonvoy gift cards), that in each case, are owned or managed by Marriott International, Inc. and its affiliates.

Buy the gift card using a credit card. If they go bankrupt (which is highly unlikely), you can ask for a chargeback. Usually it's 540 days from the transaction date to dispute something that doesn't have an expected date of delivery or an expiry date. Before proceeding, check with your card issuer.

Is it better using a Bonvoy US card for the 6x or Plat Canadian cats for 12% - foreign exchange fee? The exchange fee is only 2.5% I believe.

Does everyone just book standard rate stays with Marriott? I was looking at a random hotel and the difference between standard and pre-paid (the latter of which, these GC's would not qualify for, I believe) for a 4 night stay was easily a few hundreds

Surely that totally negates the savings of these GCs?

Sometimes the senior/ government/ package rate is cheaper than the pre-paid one.

Its in USD, not for only USA folks

plus you can use the GC's at *almost* any Marriott property - the GC currency will convert from USD to hotel's regular currency though if its anything other than USD

Then you are screwed because your gift cards will be worthless and my wallet is safe.

This is actually tempting as we had a really good stay at the Marriott Grand Chateau in Vegas right before the pandemic and I am guessing when this is all over, the deals there will be fantastic. So an extra 20% might pay off nicely, although it may be a while before we can safely travel...Choices, choices...

Alert: Marriott gift cards do not work with prepay reservation prices. It's like buying a gift card but cannot use it for sale items.

See here: https://gifts.marriott.com/faq.html
Q. Can I use a GiftCard to pre-pay for a room reservation (e.g. Advance Purchase Rates)?

In a galaxy far far …
I guess the question on travel related items and services is how much better can the deals get? 20% off hotel stays with this deal. Can it go lower?

Wondering if you can reserve under a card but when you get there change the billing mechanism to this. I have changed my billing mechanism to cash many times when I arrive or check out.

Anything is possible but it is YMMV, depending who you deal w/ at the hotel for the pre-paid.
Save a lot but end up spending more
