Scores of cars congregate in Toronto before allegedly racing on highways
The Canadian Press
Published Sunday, May 10, 2020 9:59AM EDT

Toronto police are investigating after dozens of vehicles congregated in a parking lot before allegedly racing along nearby streets and highways.

Const. Alex Li says there were between 150 and 200 vehicles in the west Toronto parking lot before officers arrived on Saturday at about 11 p.m.

They were reportedly doing donuts and other stunts in what Li describes as being like a scene out of "Fast & Furious".

Li says that when officers got to the scene, the vehicles sped off and allegedly raced on different highways.

He says police are out patrolling for the suspects, including Ontario Provincial Police, who have jurisdiction over the highways.

Police forces across Ontario have reported a spike in stunt driving incidents as roads have emptied due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

This report by The Canadian Press was first published May 10, 2020.

With general crime on the low, the next time they get reports like this they should send every cruiser they got with zero lights and sirens and then block all the entrances to the mall & lay down spike strips where they can't physically close the gap. Those who try to evade & drive around the cop cars will puncture their tires and can easily be charged as disobeying police orders to stop & evading police. Any other car who tries to exit out the mall by other means (over curbs) will just damage their under bellies.

Wow
Watching the news right now. A 19 year old was clocked at 304 kph on the QEW last night. Multiple charges & they impounded daddy's car. Wondering if he was late for this meet up.

I like your idea.

Or box them in, arrest all the drivers, then hop into their vehicles and have a huge demolition derby!

My belief it's time the Government updates the HTA and makes the stunt driving charge tiered. Obviously 50kph over with minimum 7 days impound & licence suspension isn't enough to deter. 100kph over should be 60 days impound, and anything in major excess of that (>150kph) should be 6mths impound and licence revoked. In this case, 208kph over, car should be cubed.

Don’t even need a tune. Just remove the limiter.

So a 19-year old with his friend take his father's Mercedes C63 AMG out to a 'car meet' to goof off, end up fleeing from police, gets clocked at 308 kph while endangering other motorists on the highway, and this is the penalty?
The driver’s licence has also been suspended for seven days and the vehicle has been impounded for the same amount of time.
Seven days? That'll teach 'em!

You missed the part about criminal charges: "Schmidt said that the driver was stopped near Burlington and was subsequently charged with stunt driving under the Highway Traffic Act as well as a criminal charge of dangerous driving."

I know there are graduated fines that go along with that. Maybe someone can post them.

Sorry, I rarely speed. I know I would never hit the lowest threshold. All I remember is they looked to be expensive.

I believe it’s $10k 7 days. But keep in mind this is on the spot not after a court date which makes stunt driving laws super sketchy as you are at the mercy of the police.
