Mechanic damaged my car, what can I do?

My wife drove our 2013 highlander to a mechanic for service yesterday. The same mechanic did the service for this car last year. So nobody else touched this car for like 2 years except this mechanic. (the lockdowns and virus has caused less frequent service).

I checked the maintenance schedule before my wife went. just oil and air filter change. The mechanic told us to do gear oil change. we asked why the official maintenance schedule doesn't say, he said as per inspection. It's ok the car is more than 8 years old anyway. 140 dollars for gear oil change.

My wife came home in the evening and I drove the car to LCBO. As soon as I sat in the car I felt something wrong. I was adjusting the seat and immediately found the seat panel came out (as the first picture). I am pretty sure the panel had no problem last time I drove this car. (Why? funny thing we went shopping last sunday, I don't like shopping so I waited in the car. I adjusted the seat back and forth to make myself comfortable :), so I am pretty sure the seat panel was totally fine last time I drove it).

Then I checked the seat panel, the plastic piece snapped as the second picture shows, that's why the panel came out. since it was good last time we drove it, we called the mechanic. He simply said he didn't touch anything and didn't damage our car. I scratched my head and thought wow, so the panel happened to break down on the way to service? what a luck!

This morning I checked the car again. I found something. As you can see in the picture 3, the brand new mark on the screw! It's obvious somebody tried to unscrew it and left the mark their. Otherwise how this screw hidden inside the panel has this new mark on it?!

I called the mechanic again to ask why he even tried to unscrew the seat panel as we only did some oil change?! He insisted he didn't do anything. And said he would look into it and fix it for free if there is no cost. There is no easy fix unless replacing the panel because the plastic piece already snapped! More than this, I am really curious why the heck he even tried to touch this part! Maybe tried to take some part like module like I heard some bad mechanics did?! wow, I am gonna stop going there for sure. (I have an appointment next week for another car). What can I do now? Is there any government department I can report this kind of things?

Thanks a lot in advance!

seat panels do brake.
so even if he sat and accidentally broke it, its not a big deal, ask him to install new one for free and everybody will be even.

he is a small guy, like 160cm tall.

To be honest my focus is not on the broken panel. my concern is why he even tried to unscrew this panel! steal something? I am thinking if we still can go to this mechanic.

Maybe he was trying to do you a fav because pic 1, seats all wrinklely.

But highly unlikely any professional will go extra mile to things for free. If you have before and after pic, you probably have a case. Otherwise, look for your fam to point finger. Most likely your wife, son, daughter was up to no good.

I am not. why this forum full of people liking to tease. I don't know why he touched this part. I don't care the cause. but as the picture showed, there is new mark on the screw. Who tried to unscrew it? ghost? I am pretty sure I didn't sleep walking and did it!

If you have proof like before pic and after pic of the seat clip when you took your car into service, you might have a case, but the mean people in the internet is trying to tell you, you obviously can't live with the broken panel.

well, I can or can't live with it not your business. and I knew not much I can do because nobody would take a picture of seat panel before an oil service change! my point is simple, according to the new mark on the screw, somebody just tried to unscrew the panel. this made me curious because no reason the mechanic needed to touch this part. so I just ask if anybody here had this kind of experience. what the mechanic was trying to do? if nobody knows, I am. fine. Nobody actually look for real help from a forum. just info gathering. right? so if you don't know, you don't need to tease or blame me on asking!

whatever. are you guys mechanics? just curious. I don't see anything funny or crazy about my post.

my panel was fine 5 days ago. I found the panel broken same day after the service. I found the new mark on the screw that proved somebody was trying to unscrew the panel. I din't and nobody else touched this car. So I am curious what happened and why he did. I asked on the forum to see if anybody had this kind of experience. I didn't post any private information. just a very general question.

I don't see I paranoid or crazy or stupid based on my post. then replies are full of teasing and blame...I think I should be the one who don't understand those mean replies. maybe 1.5 years of lockdowns really make people crazy. haha

Unless you also looked at the screw 5 days ago how do you know that mark is even new?

Either way whether or not he broke it you have no proof he did so no point in dwelling over it.

wow, good question. I am amazed by mechanics here. As a man who diy and fix lots of things in a house, I can tell you I am sure how to tell if a screw was just touch recently or long time ago based on marks! especially those dark-coloured screws

I am done here. u guys have a nice weekend.

So you can't give me an answer and resort to acting offended great. You need to learn how to read properly instead of being outraged. Even if the screw has a mark you have no idea when that mark was put there you cannot say it happened Tuesday July 22 2021 at 5:30pm or Wednesday November 17 2015.

Have a good weekend bud!

since u insist, I can tell you. this screw shouldn't have any marks! because I have never done any service or repair on the seat! so, it should be just like what it was in the factory without any marks on it!
