[Memory Express] Patriot Glyde USB 3.1 Flash Drive, 256GB - $29.99

Patriot is a good brand for flash memory in my opinion. I was looking for a new USB drive to store my music in my car and came across this flash daily deal. Best price I've seen for this capacity so far.

Where are you getting this data? Patriot states it's USB 3.1 Gen 1 which means it should give you 5Gbps bandwidth.

I believe he is basing this on reviews in general. This drive on other sites have been criticized by customers as being very slow for USB 3.1.

Don’t own this myself so I can’t review myself, but it’s not just one reviewer I’ve seen say this, but several. One reviewer I saw said that Patriot support themselves say the drive is only capable of 10 MB/s.

Use case matters. I suppose if you are archiving or putting music to use as a media drive, but if your looking for something to move around and store 256GB of files constantly, it’ll get annoying.

Thanks to all for the reviews. OP using it for mp3s in his car won't be disappointed tho, it's plenty fast for that.

Even if it is relatively slow that is a lot of storage space! Good find

USB 3.1 Gen 1 is just a protocol for the interface.
When unscrupulous manufacturers combine it with slow memory chips, the resulting data transfer rates will be governed by the slowest element in the combination.
For some (most?) USB flash drives, the move to USB 3.1 is just a gimmick; low-grade, "bottom-of-the-barrel" memory chips used in such USB flash drives are so slow that they cannot come close to saturating even the USB 2.0 protocol at 480mbps...

I don't recommend buying this. I got the 128GB version for $19.99, and it is EXTREMELY slow. I doubt it is even USB 2.0 speed. It took me almost 1 hour just to create a recovery disk for windows.

At least it's not a Kingston Datatraveller 50. Those seem to be defective. Used one recently and was getting a mere 4 MB/sec. transfer speed which is down to USB 1.0 speeds. Lots of complaints on those...
