[Memory Express] QNAP TS-673A NAS - $1029.99 ($190 off) - Others On Sale Also

Couple locations in Calgary and Edmonton have this in stock and on sale. Really well reviewed NAS unit and if you are worried about the native QNAP OS it's pretty easy to run TrueNAS Scale or Unraid on it instead. Several other QNAP units are also on sale with limited stock in various locations.

A word of caution, a vulnerability was discovered today affecting many of the qnap products. Always make sure you are running the lates release.

Yeah... QNAP is plagued with vulnerability. Get Synology instead.

Or just run a different OS like TrueNAS or Unraid. Best of both worlds.

Everything has the potential to be exploited.
None of these appliances should be exposed to the internet regardless.

You can do that on QNAP hardware?

Yup. Unlike Synology, most QNAP units can run other OS without too much difficulty.

Personally I don't like Synology because if you don't like their OS you're stuck with useless hardware. If you go QNAP and don't like their OS you can change it on most units.

Got a synology and also one for my parents. For general backup like photos etc it has been excellent. Interface is more like Google photos so it has been super easy for set up and usage by my parents.

Indeed. I’d rather build my own system, anyhow. It’s really not that hard.

Can a truenas machine run without internet? Just on local network? I want to have a server that is for home use only, plex and personal file and document storage. And I want it to be secure.

I don't see why not.

Yes full licenses work without intenret. Only the trial needs internet access to validate the license.

I'm using my Synology for Plex storage and proxmox VM backups. It's so great to have something I don't need to tinker with that is in a smaller form factor than anything i can DIY.

I personally switched over from QNAP to Synology a few years back cause Synology just had the easier GUI and I just want it for backing up stuff, expanded to using it for Plex and also Surveillance station.

I ran TruNAS before but having such a bulky older PC with a gigantic footprint and I'm sure a lot more power consumption was not what I was looking for.
