good price, but nothing amazing. You'll find Seagate/WD 4TB drives going on special for $149 on a regular basis from various retailers. free ship would make it sweeter.

HGST 4TB NAS drives routinely got on sale for 129-139$ at newegg. I have 5 of those and there great. Same warranty but spin faster.. Maybe a bit louder to some, but i prefer the faster speeds myself.

That's not a bad price, but I haven't kept up with the HGST brand. How is the reliability for their NAS drives?

From my understanding and backblaze reports there one of the best in reliability

+1, while noisier then red drives, I would trust HGST NAS drives as much as WD Red.

Looks like memoryexpress online store is out-of-stock, but you can get the same $149.99 price from newegg Canada for a HGST DeskStar 4 TB NAS (and shipping is less than memoryexpress, $5.99 vs $8.99). HGST is equal-or-greater-than in reliability and performance compared to WD Red NAS.

hmm, decent prices compared to previous year.
for historical comparison, the ds216play nas was going for $ 230 in Mar 2017; & 4 gb reds were going for $200 in May 2017; $ 190 in July 2017 and $ 175 in Aug 2017.

Any thoughts on waiting for WD Black 6TB to drop to $200 or less, or just go with the HGST 6TB drive that is currently $200? For the 4TB pricing, I'd just get the 6TB.

Edit: Going to use it for non-raid, non-NAS media/game drive. OS is on SSD.

I wouldn't really think this is an apple to apple comparison since the HGST drive is built for a NAS. They have similar spin speeds but the DRAM in the WD Black would be a dramatic performance increase to the HGST drive. If you are planning to install applications/games on the drive that require quicker reading, I'd say go with the WD Black but if you wanted simple mass storage (for movies/tv shows), save the money and get the HGST.

I don't have personal experience with the Purple drives. However, a post from the Synology user forum suggests that they are probably not a good choice:

"These drives are designed for "it's more important to complete the read or write in the specified time frame than that the data written or read be correct" usage. Pretty much the opposite of what you want in a NAS that stores important documents, business data, treasured photos/videos, or anything except short-lived (days, weeks) streamed data."
