Great deal! Too bad I already have a perfectly working surface 2.

The protection plan isn't worth it.

I only had it for about 15 months and never used it. It says "up to 2 years". Last I checked, nothing in T&C provides coverage to the 2 year mark.

I think the 15" went down to $1299 a couple months ago. Regardless, it's a great deal.
I have the 15" and the build quality is fantastic. The battery life could be better, however.

Watch out for the 8GB AMD-based Surface Laptops, as they have 2GB of system memory hardcoded to the GPU, with no option to change it, which means you effectively only have 6GB of system memory.

It's not such a big deal with 16GB (but those are expensive) but the 8GB/6GB is problematic as after Win 10 boots, you really only have 2-3GB of free memory, which is not enough for multiple programs + Chrome will eat that immediately. Very nice system for the $$$ aesthetically, but damn, you don't want to be running Win 10 on 6GB on 2020. I would load up an Excel sheet and there would immediately be 0GB free.

I bought a 15" AMD 8GB Surface Laptop 3 during the last sale, and couldn't believe it only had 6GB, then I confirmed on Reddit (reviews mysteriously don't mention this), confirmed with Microsoft there is no way to change this setting in the BIOS, so I returned it to BB and bought a "business" i7/16GB unit from MS Store.

3:2 screen sounds great, but besides that I am very confused by the pricing on these. Minimal soldered RAM, older generation AMD processor for over 1k is supposed to be a deal?

Very nice! I would definitely jump on this if it was 16gb ram or if the RAM was upgradeable

That depends on how much you spent on it, especially with the screen-cracking issues of the Surface Laptop 3 - I bought a top-end Business i7 16GB system and put the 2-years complete protection on it for $191 (the cost is the same no matter the SL3's price) as I really don't want to eat $2400 (on sale) on an accident. Plus, the price protection on the sale price more than covered the coverage cost.

But yeah, if you're spending $1100 on a fabric/non-metallic (metal-on-metal is where the screen cracking is taking place), then there is really no reason to plop on another $200+ with tax

You're paying for the high-end touch-screen and the very thin-and-light form factor more than anything - it's really a Macbook for PC users and priced similarly.

And I will say that initially, the 8GB AMD 15" Surface Laptop 3 looked like a nice deal on sale, as it was certainly fast enough and I love the Surface Laptop design - it's soooo light and I can literally carry it around all over the house. But being limited to only 6GB of usable memory was a total deal-killer, as it would just hit a wall with any significant program load, and even Chrome would kill it. If it actually had 8GB of memory, I would still own it.

With the next generation, Microsoft needs to move to 16GB + 256GB SSD as a base minimum.

And isn't it convenient that only the 8GB AMD Ryzen 15" models are on sale at $200-$370 off while the 16-32GB 15" models are still at the regular price?

Ever since the 6GB memory limit came to light, these (supposedly) 8GB AMD Surface Laptop 3's are industry pariahs and I expect prices to drop even further.

Get the 13in from Costco. Its $1199 right now. It comes with the Arc Mouse, an extra year of warranty and painless Costco returns if the laptop craps out within 3 months. Not worth buying from Microsoft Store/Bestbuy.

It's more complicated than that. Situations where Chrome (or any browser) would have performance issues can depend on many factors. The fault wouldn't be the 6GB of usable ram, but the point that it is on the low side for 2020 is certainly true.

Well I have used 8GB Surface laptops in the past with no problems at all - sure 16GB is better, but it didn't immediately tap out with the first 1-2 applications loaded. With only 6GB, I noticed a serious decrease in snappiness, especially when loading and saving large files. It takes like at least 2X as long on the 6GB as it does on a true 8GB, as I think the entire file is swapping back and forth to the SSD.

Loading Win 10 having ~2.5GB of available memory compared to ~4.5GB is a huge difference when it comes to multi-tasking, loading a pile of Chrome tabs, or dealing with large data files. For me, the 6GB AMD Surface Laptop was absolutely useless, which is too bad, as otherwise it's a very nice system. MS and AMD just made the idiotic decision (likely to enhance stability) of hard-locking 2GB of memory to the GPU. And MS didn't even bother to produce a 15" Intel-based consumer model, so you have to buy it at the MS Store for big bucks.

What's even more troubling is that NONE of the press reviews even mentioned this massive design flaw ($$$), leading to poor saps like myself getting sucked into buying a stunted 6GB laptop, and then having to return it.
