Here are the Games with Gold offerings for the Month of August. One of their better months in a while now

Darksiders III ($59.99 ERP): Available August 1 to 31
Yooka-Laylee ($39.99 ERP): Available August 16 to September 15
Lost Planet 3 ($19.99 ERP): Available August 1 to 15
Garou: Mark of the Wolves ($9.99 ERP): Available August 16 to 31

Darksiders III is a big deal. That's a relatively recent title, good reviews (albeit not great, but still a solid game).

Once you download you keep the title as long as you have Gold. It won't disappear.

Oh! I did not know that. I thought the title would become inaccessible after the month, similar to how Ultimate works.

Ultimate does not work like that either.

It's either Games with Gold for which :
- Xbox One games remain available as long as you have an active subscription to Xbox Live Gold (or Game Pass Ultimate, which includes Xbox Live Gold)
- Xbox 360 games remain yours forever

or it's Game Pass :
- Games remain available as long as you're subscribed AND as long as they're on Game Pass which could last weeks or months or indefinitely.

Do you have to actually fully download the game or is it sufficient to “get” the game and stop the download when it is in the que?

Just add to your library. you can start the DL and cancel it if you want safe measure. But once purchased it'll tag to your account.
