Missed payments on bills

I had a few months where I've missed a few payments (not consecutively), on various bills like phone, hydro, water bills. Does this affect my credit score negatively at all? Or is it insignificant?

Also, speaking of credit scores, what else besides mortgages is it used for?

If you don't go MORE than 30 days overdue, you should be ok. Get your credit score from Borrowell (Equifax) or CreditKarma (Transunion) to see what's been reported on you.

Credit reports and scores are used for a lot of things besides mortgages. Getting any credit, including non-prepaid cell phone accounts, credit cards, lines of credit, car loans can all be impacted. Also, some jobs do credit checks as a condition of hiring, although I believe they're looking for really significant things, like bankruptcies, judgments against you, etc. Landlords also often do credit checks on prospective tenants, as well.
