Money already on newly activated Canadian Tire Money loyalty card? Why?

I spotted something odd in a newly activated Canadian Tire Money loyalty card that mom got. It is a new card (still stuck on the cardboard) I got directly for her from customer service at the store. I did not make any purchase at the time. When my mom used it to register an account on Canadian Tire website and attached the card to it, it showed that the card already has a small balance (it is less than a dollar). She had no prior Canadian Tire account. Is this normal? Could this be a phantom balance?

I am now worried that this is a previously used card. Am I correct? Is it possible that someone else is already using the same card and had already registered it before. Surely, Canadian Tire would have checked for duplicate card number when my mom registered the card.

Called Canadian Tire customer service about it. No help at all.

Can anyone chime in?

It’s been AGES since I got my Cdn Tire Money Card... so I can only guess

Sounds like a Promotion, or else they credited some Cdn Tire money to her account. I seem to recall when we went to the Plastic Card we emptied out our pockets / wallet / purse and handed in our old Cdn Tire Paper Money, which was then credited to our new Cdn Tire Plastic Money Cards.

To be honest, we love Cdn Tire... great place to buy everyday stuff, especially when on sale. But their Loyalty Program is slower than molasses... it takes forever to accumulate any decent money on the card unless you have a Cdn Tire Branded CC linked in ... or buy a lot of gasoline from them.

Now that she has the account set up are you able to see anything under Order History? On the menu line Account then Order History.

Thanks to both.

We just checked her account history. There is nothing there. No prior purchase. The date that the small amount of Canadian Tire money was deposited was only about 2 weeks ago, so obviously it cannot be related to my mom's prior purchase or personalized promotion since she had yet to even create the account at that time.

Just bizarre. Customer service at Canadian Tire was completely baffled.

I think the safest thing to do is deactivate it and get a new card, since no one can give you an answer (even officially). It seems remotely possible that someone was able to access it previously and could potentially use up your mom's balance in the future. It could also be a bonus or a glitch, but why take the chance? I think the speculation at one point was that the PC Points scam was an insider job, too, which may explain the card's weird order history.

Go to a different CT location to get the new card.
