MotoMaster Hydra Edge All Season tires

Does anyone here has experience using these tires? They’re on sale for 25% off at Canadian Tire this week.

I’ll be using them for mostly city and highway driving in the GTA, spring to fall, and 15,000km / year

I will get them installed by my local mechanic, not the CT mechanic.

RFD has a thread on these tires a couple of years ago, and it got detailed with Chinese factories talk. Please stick to discussing the tires.

Thank you

I am trying to decide between MotoMater and Bridgestone from Costco. Costco ones are $150 off but still come $225+ more for 195/65/15 tires (including install), also CT has some offers that give like $25 in CT money + 4% CT money. I like Costoc, but it's quite a difficult decision.

Would normally suggest the brand name tires but having dealt with crappy bridgestone customer service I would avoid, imho.
2022: BOC raised 8 times and MCAP raised its prime next day.
2017 to 2018: BOC raised rates 5 times and MCAP raised its prime next day each time.
2020: BOC dropped rates 3 times and MCAP waited to drop its prime to include all 3 drops.

Those tires will last you 4-5 years lets say so spread the extra cost over 4-5 years and it really isn't that much more get the better tires the difference in performance(safety) from crappy tires and name brands in significant.

I also want to say that those tires are made by Michelin. At least that’s the impression I got from them, had them on a vehicle for a short while, never had any issues with them.

I purchased these tires a couple years ago, and have roughly 20 - 25k kms on them (only used in non winter months)
I have no complaints about them.
I don’t notice any wear, but I’m sure the tread has worn at least a few mm.
Like any tire, just make sure you keep your suspension in top shape and aligned, along with rotating the tires, and they’ll do you fine.

They may have innocently misled you.

Michelin did have a tire called HydroEdge (since discontinued).

The Motomaster tread pattern looks nothing like them, so I doubt that CT is contracting Michelin to do a private label run.

Not saying that it can't be a perfectly good tire in its own right, nor that every Michelin tire line is worth the premium price they command.

Michelin did have an economy line called Warrior made in China for a few decades.
Maybe CT has struck up an agreement with that Chinese tire manufacturer.

There was no misleading, it was somewhat of an observation I made. I had both Michelin and these motormaster tires come with a used car I purchased. The marking patterns on the sidewalks on both sets looked very similar. Personally, I would never buy tires from Canadian Tire. Motormaster tires used to be garbage, but I didn’t have any issues with the ones I had.

I bought the Motomaster SE3 All Season Tire which has been replaced by the Hydra Edge I think.
No complaints, as good as and a little quieter than the Continental True Contact they replaced.

I read on rfd they are manufactured by Cooper

Tire brands & manufacturers not as straightforward as you would think

The above article may be broadly correct but certainly doesn't fully cover where each tire brand may be manufactured.

The important point is that any one tire maker may be owned by more than one parent company (who are themselves competitors).
For example, 10 years before Uniroyal-Goodrich was acquired by Michelin, the European Uniroyal factories were acquired by Continental in 1979.
And Uniroyal continues to be a well-known brand through most of the world.

BTW on Continental, the German company claims to be the only foreign tire company operating their own factory in China.
The other tire companies of course are pretty much all involved in China, but through existing tire makers there.

And just because a big tire maker buys another one, it doesn't mean the one acquired gets absorbed. Their original plants, workers, and brand continue as if little had happened.

The thing to keep in mind with store label tires, such as Motomaster, is that one year they may well be made by Cooper in one country and the next year by Michelin in another country.

Adding further confusion, not all sizes of a particular tire model are made in the same factory or country. So you can't generalize.

And light truck tires are typically made in different plants to same brand passenger vehicle tires.

I actually ended up going with MICHLEIN XTOUR A/S T+H (195/65R15) for $615.22 all in, including installation from Costco. The main reason i went with those was, Costco road hazard warranty and tires' UTQG: 820 A B, which will make them last quite long, hopefully.

Costco wont install them on Prius rims (on Corolla) stating the lugs are bit short for thicker rims. I got them installed on OEM rims, and took winter tires home; will decide next season on weather or those rims any good.

Maybe that is one of the reasons German car makers go with lug bolts rather than nuts on studs?

Easier to just use the correct length bolt for a different rim than having to change the studs out.
Or messing about with different types of lug nut (open-ended versus closed-ended).
