Mounting an exterior light fixture flush to a brick wall.

Just wondering if there is a way to mount a flush light fixture to brick without recessing an octagon box, or flush mounting some weather-tight box.

I was thinking about a pancake box.

The 2 fixtures I have need to be tight up against the brick.

thanks!

You might be able to mount the light bracket to the wall, but are you going to have enough room in the fixture to joint the wires?

You can surface mount a pancake box and go that route. Just make sure you have a good solid seal around the fixture to the wall. I typically use caulking around it afterwards to ensure there is no leaks. It’s rare that exterior walls are smooth/even so you rarely get a good seal from the fixture alone.

That would only be an acceptable option if the light fixture is rated to be a junction box. Typically if it is rated for it you’ll find it has knockouts for a cable clamp. If it is not you must have a proper box installed.
