Movie Theaters are trash now

Just decided to have our first movie date night experience in over 2+ years... WTF has happened?

Have people forgotten how to act in movie theaters?

Talking loud, rustling around, using their cellphones and the flashlight when their friends drop their cellphones.

Think of the Childre…
Nothing new, it's always been that way. I go when the movie has been released for few weeks, less people.

WOULD SOMEBODY THINK OF THE CHILDREN!!!

Did you speak up?

Since the pandemic, we went 7 times, all VIP and not a single problem.

I can let it go if you take your cell phone say twice, anymore than that I will tell you put it away. I've done it 4 times, once a cell phone the rest was be quite.

We've been to a few since pandemic started and it was fine for us. We went to Colossus in Vaughan, where did you go? Theater to theater, the clientele makes a huge difference.

I always see comments like this and I just wonder where in the world is this happening. Maybe I've just been incredibly lucky but I almost never experience this and when I have it's only been for a few seconds for the entire movie. I start to wonder if these are the same people who see one tiny spot on a hotel room floor and then go and write a 1 star review about how the whole room was disgustingly filthy and demanding a full refund.

Our experience was at Queensway Cineplex.

Went to see spiderman, which has been out for quite some time now. We also like to go after the movie has been out for a bit, for USUALLY a better, quieter experience.

This was also the first weekend with no vac pass. So that could be why the theatre was busier. Please don't interpret this as an anti vac comment. Because all the my first comments came from a bunch of tweens. I will say this tho, there was a bunch of coughing and sneezing through the whole movie. Please if you feel off, stay home and watch a movie at home. This applys to EVERYONE.

Absolutely love the movies and the cinema experience. Can't stand watching first-run movies at home. I don't care how expensive or badass my friends brag about their home theatre setups are they can't match my laser IMAX experience. Smiling Face With Sunglasses

I don't think they're trash but for me it's less about other people and more that the projection technology used in theatres is outdated at this point and isn't an inherently better experience than modern home theatres anymore. I recently watched Dune both at Scotiabank IMAX and at home and still preferred the latter because I found the projected IMAX experience lacking the definition, clarity and color depth of the 4K HDR/Dolby Vision home experience. They also had the sound turned up obnoxiously loud and not EQd well enough to sound good at that volume.
I only went to see Dune because I hadn't been to a theatre in years and it was something to get out and do after covid restrictions loosened up, but after getting used to watching in pristine 4K quality at home, the flaws of the picture quality were very distracting and it wasn't until the 20mg edible I took kicked in that I was able to tune them out and enjoy the film. The bigger screen is cool but it isn't inherently better or more immersive to me and I won't be back anytime soon.

Jeez we have much different experiences then. I find the longer a movie is out, the stupider the patronage. When it's not recent it's like they feel they have a right to be stupid and noisy.
Also the fact that theaters are finally back more normally could mean people have forgotten how to act in public. Or with more people in a theater, the higher population there also means more percentage of idiots.
In any case, it sucks you had a bad experience. That's the thing I will never miss about theater-going - relying on people showing proper etiquette. Big TV helps a bit!

Occasionally, I'll see a movie at one of the Cineplex VIP Theatres. I'll only substitute my laser IMAX with another premium large format theatre like the UltraAVX with Dolby Atmos surround sound when the former is unavailable. I've been too spoiled with laser IMAX at the downtown Scotiabank Theatre that any other IMAX theatre is crap in comparison. The only other theatre on par with Scotiabank Theatre laser IMAX is the Cinesphere. If I'm being really honest, it is superior. They are my only 2 "go to" IMAX theatres in the GTA for 2022. Adiós to IMAX theatres in both Vaughan and Mississauga for me. Just not worth the inferiority quality from their Xenon projectors compared to the dual 4K laser IMAX experience.

Whenever, there are IMAX format movies playing at the Cinesphere you should definitely catch one of their films. Today, they are playing "Spider-Man: No Way Home" in IMAX with the aspect ratio of 1.90 to 1. Next week "Dunkirk" will be shown in full IMAX ratio of 1.43 to 1.

This is where I go.
I caught the 12:15pm screening of Batman last Friday.
Basically, first full day of its release.
10 people in the entire theatre.
I can't stand the theatre experience for similar reasons that you stated, so for the odd times I do go, I strategize and aim for a screening where less people will be present.

I have flexibility in my schedule, so if there is a new movie I want to see, I can do so during the afternoon.
It's very nice to see a new movie early in the release, within a near empty theatre.
The caveat is - regular screening only. My assumption is that premium screenings would attract more people.
I'm easily willing to sacrifice premium features for peace of mind.

It was so awesome watching The Batman with my shoes offs, feet kicked forward, no mask, and no one even remotely near me.

I saw Spider-Man in a fairly packed theatre, and was super annoyed perpetually.

^ I used to frequent Queensway too, but haven't been there since before the pandemic. Auditorium #1 was my favorite because IMHO, it had the best UltraAVX room with Dolby Atmos surround sound. It was better than other Cineplex UltraAVX theatres in the GTA. Auditorium #18 UltraAVX room was good too, but it didn't have Dolby Atmos like Auditorium #1. I'm a real stickler for the best picture and sound quality in movie theatres. That's why I mostly watch movies in laser IMAX auditoriums now. LOL

We have tickets to see The Batman on Tuesday (cheap movie night) because we really do enjoy the theatre experience. So this will be out make or break attempt.

Our condo has a theatre room which simply needs to be reserved, no fee. With many videos going to BluRay/streaming after 8 weeks, this might be our new theatre experience.

Just not worth it now with stupid people.

Haven't set foot in a theatre since I picked up my unlocked android box and re-vamped my Home Theatre system. God. I can pause a movie ... go make some food .. and then press play to continue. No fee movies.

Between Countries
I haven’t been in a movie theatre in two years. While there’s no substitute for the big screen and big sound experience, there’s several big negatives for me.
  • I hate, hate, hate people behind me kicking my chair. I seem to always, without fail manage to find a seat in front of such a scumbag. It takes me 100% out of the experience.
  • Cell phone use, when it happens, is horrible. I once had two guys (more scumbags) sitting one seat away repeatedly turing on their phones. I was not at all shy to tell them to turn put them away. One of those jagoffs had the gall to tell me to just watch the movie, but they did put the phones away. Luckily phones haven’t been that much of a problem - what kind of idiot pays 15 or 20 bucks for a ticket just to bury his nose in the phone?
  • Sound system. Theatres are hit and miss in terms of how well they set up their sound systems. And they tend to turn it up way too loud as if decibels is a subtitle for quality sound. So what if they have a ten thousand watt Dolby Atmos system when it sounds like loud mush. My 5.2.2 Atmos setup at home is nicely positioned and set up and results in nice and discernible surround sound stage.

This behaviour has been ongoing since the time of movie theaters I think.

At least you don't have coughing, someone laughing out really loud or the rustling of popcorn bags.

With the pandemic it is worse. There's no social distancing and people don't wear their masks after eating their snacks, etc.

When I read this I immediately thought of this scene for Seinfeld:

See this is why I like going to the VIP theater. Although, there are some adults who have worse manners than some teenagers, it is generally a much more relaxed viewing experience.

I plan on going to see the new Batman eventually at the Queensway but will wait awhile. I feel bad for any attending over the March break.

The only reason I never saw movies at Queensway VIP is because those rooms never had Dolby Atmos surround sound. The only Cineplex VIP that have Dolby Atmos are the two auditoriums #4 and #5 which have Dolby Atmos at the Don Mills location.
