Haven't been in a while as it's far from me, but this place has real deal low and slow BBQ.

Buster Rhino's Southern BBQ

7-2001 Thickson Rd S, Whitby, ON L1N 6J3
(905) 436-6986

If the OP isn't that far east there's also Pig Out BBQ in Pickering. Maybe a notch down from Buster's but they're pretty good:

https://www.yelp.ca/biz/pig-out-bbq-pickering

and also Horn Dawg's next to the Pickering GO station:

There's no need to go to Rotary Ripoff Ribfests out here to get your BBQ fix with these 3 solid choices (and others I'm sure).

What I can say about Durham is, it's the land of crap Canadian chains. Because all the good chains focus on the 416, Peel, and York, and ignore Durham (I doubt we ever get Chick-Fil-A or Ruth's Chris, for example). Kudos to Five Guys for giving us a chance... and I reward them with frequent business.

All those garbage groups like MTY, RU, Obsidian, and of course (ugh) RBI (Tim Horton's) have totally flooded the area. Yelp is your friend out here to seek out decent independent alternatives to those crappy chains.

Friendly reminder #1: The Golden Arches fast food chain is McDonald's, not MacDonald's. Thank you for your attention.
Friendly reminder #2: Price matching is NOT the law. Never was, never will be. Nobody can stop you from shopping elsewhere.

If you like Italian food try Amici on Liverpool Rd./401.
Fast food tradition try The Big M, it's on Liverpool south of Bayley.
For breakfast we'd go to The 50's Diner on Kingston Rd. west of Brock. It used to be a Wimpy's.
Roughly where in Durham are you moving to?

- Avanti's in Oshawa and Corrado's in Brooklin
- Bang Bang Burrito in Oshawa (fast casual)
- Il Fornello in Ajax (I don't care for it but people love it)
- Cafe Symposium in Ajax
- Bella Notte in Whitby
- Pita Deli (Oshawa/Whitby)
- JP's Pita in Bowmanville
- Many of the local pubs offer good pub style food as well (Courtyard, Bulldog, Riley's, Tap and Tankard, Charley Ronnicks, Frosty Johns)
- La Pizza et Pasta and Pizza Pino's for your 'Za needs

You're in Ajax? Pizza Pino rules!

Never been but there's also the $15 specials at Casino Ajax (Ajax Downs). 2 lobster tails and prime rib Thursdays and Fridays 4-11pm.
https://casinoajax.com/dining/

Hot bagels fresh out of the oven at What-A-Bagel
https://www.whatabagel.com/stores/1-rossland-rd-e/

If you feel like a giant burrito, bypass the garbage Mucho Burrito (MTY Group, ugh) and BarBurrito (what a stupid name) and make your way to FAT BASTARD in Pickering or Whitby. You can thank me later:

Big fan of Jasper Fish and Chips in Pickering. I think it's run by Hong Kong expats who used to serve British customers, given the quality and authenticity of the product:

If you want real sushi, Durham is hopeless. Kobo Gourmet in Pickering is the best of a sorry lot, and I mention them because unlike the others it's actually owned and run by Japanese. Any other sushi in Durham is going to be a Chinese McSushi Roll place.

Ajax is great for shawarma... two nice places on Harwood Avenue South, Pita Land and Pita Delites.

Durham restaurants to avoid:

Tim Horton's
Burger King
The Keg
Chuck's Roadhouse
Montana's
Boston Pizza
McCoy Burger (very lame local copycat of Five Guys, go to the real deal and skip these poseurs)
Second Cup (that chain is not long for this world...)
Coffee Culture (lame copycat of Starbucks)
South Street Burger -- the second coming of Lick's, ugh
Works Burger -- bad clone of Red Robin, also owned by MTY Shit Corp.
any Asian buffet not called Mandarin
any Asian AYCE place where you enter your orders into an iPad because the staff don't speak English*
any sushi place not called Kobo Gourmet
anything in the Whitby Entertainment Centrum complex that isn't Starbucks (which technically isn't in the complex itself)
any Mexican place with "Lindo" in the name
Halibut House

* definitely Makimono, Dragon Rolls, and 1298 Sushi are of this type. Avoid them all

There was no agenda. As I am Muslim, my eating restrictions are tailored to halal food. Regardless, both the sushi places & donut place aren't halal establishments. I just recommended good food.

Plus, wouldn't it make sense for me to secretly suggest halal-only locations if that was my hidden agenda?

Not a fan at all of Patois, go to Berryl's Pepperpot for a more authentic and not "wet" jerk.
