My 2010 VW Jetta TDI review (43k km later)

I recently purchased a 2010 VW Jetta TDI 6MT Trendline (base model) as my DD.. Just want to post some thoughts for people who are thinking about buying this car :D

Exterior walkaround: The biggest difference between the base model and the uplevel are the wheels. 16" steelies with hubcaps is what you get with the base.. otherwise the exterior is pretty much the same except for fog lights and chrome window trims. Many critics have said the exterior of the car is too bland. I personally don't mind it, I think it's quite elegant (in a understated way) and looks like a mini-Passat. 8/10.

Interior: For 2010, the Jetta received the "MK6" interior (revised steering wheel, HVAC controls, dashboard). IMO it is better looking then the MK5 interior, especially the HVAC controls.. the dashboard has been updated with white backlights instead of blue.. the base model does not have a multi-fuction display, and only shows exterior temperature along with the other standard stuff (time, cruise control, etc). The steering wheel has no audio control and is made with vinyl (same as the hand brake lever, uplevel cars get leather) Space is ok, it is a "compact" car after all. Seats are comfortable and I like the materials used for the seats. The trunk is huge.8.5/10.

Powertrain: The TDI engine is one of the best engines I've had the chance to drive. Power delivery is smooth and the traditional diesel noise is pretty much eliminated from the inside. You can still hear the clattering sound on the outside, however it is not intrusive at all. This is my first manual transmission car and I had a pretty easy time learning to drive it. Clutch is slightly heavier than the other cars I've sampled, and the engagment point is relatively high. At first it was hard to execute a smooth take off, however after a while you'll get it (like most cars). I've driven over 300 km so far (good mix of city/highway, as well as low speed on side streets when I was practicing) and I still have somewhere between 3/4 and 1/2 tank. A far cry from my other car (Land Rover LR3). 9/10.

Price/Value: I got mine for 25,900 on the road, which I thought wasn't too shabby. I didn't take the finance option (0% for 66 months) and paid cash instead. The $500 OEM accessories was a nice bonus (you can't take cash credit though, as my salesperson had told me). I got the Edition 30 shifter, pedals, monster mats and a licence plate frame (yes yes yes.. there was a little bit of credit left over that I don't know what to do with). 8/10.

Equipment: IMO the "base" model is pretty well-equipped. I've added the cold weather package (heated seats, washer nozzle jets) and ESP ($725 total). Not too bad for equipments that would greatly enhance winter driving experience. For those who don't know, diesels takes a long time to warm up on a cold winter day. I normally could care less about having heated seats with cloth seats, but this is one exception. For those who are interested in the base model, the notable "useful" stuff that are missing is the center armrest (both front and rear seats) and CD changer. 8/10.

Any other questions or opinions, feel free to post them here. Would love to hear from you guys. :)

Thanks OP. A very useful review.

I'm curious to see how the remaining 2010 Jetta TDIs (or Jettas in general) are priced after the pricing for 2011 was published. The new price seems be very aggressive, going after the Civic/Civic Hybrid price point.

I was/still am very close to trading my 2007 GTI for a 2010 TDI leftover.

Pros:
- great engine
- fuel economy
- good warranty

Con:
- 2011 to arrive in Sep probably priced close to the 2010 less incentives

I don't think the 2010 Jetta has the MK VI interior. Maybe a freshened steering wheel.

The TDI drives nicely. Its just been hard to pull the trigger and go from a loaded GTI to a base Jetta. I notice the things that are not there.

If it was my $500 accessory cash, I would have gotten the center armrest.

Thanks for the review. The lease on my 2007 Odyssey is up in April 2011. I'm considering the Outback, Rav4, Golf station wagon.

For cold winter starts, do you really have to use the glow plugs? How's the trunk space?

Is it hard to get kids in and out who are still using car seats?

Thanks.

diesel cars do not have spark plugs, rather they use glow plugs. So you switch it to on, and give it a few seconds before you crank it. You don't change glow plugs frequently as you do copper spark plugs. Maybe as frequent as iridium spark plugs. alternatively you could get a oil heater installed and plug it in to the garage outlet with a timer.

Very good review, lots of detail. Thank very much. I will use your info more than that of some of the other (major magazine and newspaper) reviews I have read.

The TDI cpu seems to optimize the glow plug system for easy starting in cold weather.
The plugs stay on for a brief interval, never more than a few seconds, compared to 6-20 sec on pre-TDI VW's. The plugs last longer too. I've replaced 4 over 200,000 km. They run $25 each.
There is also a fuel line warmer just after the fuel filter, and this assists in easy winter starts.

I would if comeone offered me an interest free loan so I could make low monthly payments and use the cash I was going to pay for the car with, to invest somewhere else. Also you can just pay off the car loan at any time before 66 months if you chose to.

2010 Jettas have the MK 6 interior and MK 5 exterior, they are thus known as MK5.5

keep us posted with your experiences re: maintenance/reliability if it's not too much of a hassle. so far VW seems to be hitting it right in terms of pricing/performance combo... the german co's have had a great performance - stock and earnings wise - the past couple of quarters... MB even raised their outlook for th year.

I also purchased a 2010 Jetta TDI back in June. My purchase review was posted here:

http://forums.redflagdeals.com/2010-jet ... ew-906432/

But I never did a review of the car, when I saw your post I figured I'll just add to this rather than make a new thread.

I purchased a Candy White TDI Highline w/ DSG. The key differences include:
- fin antenna
- Sunroof
- alloy wheels
- chrome window trim
- arm rests
- 6 disc CD changer, touch screen double din stereo, USB and Aux input connections
- power recline (driver side)
- multi functional steering wheel
- blue-tooth
- leather heated seats

Exterior/Interior: Love the exterior of the car, its got a great sleakness to it. The chrome on the front bumper and on the side windows looks great. The doors aren't too heavy and when they close they make a nice soft thud. The trunk space is massive, I recently moved and had to fit a bunch of random things into the car rather than rent a small truck I figured lets see what I can get into the Jetta. I was able to fit a 20' ladder folded down into 4, a lawnmower 3 hoses (each 20 - 40 feet long), an elliptical, a bag of lawn mulch and a bunch of small gardening tools.

Needless to say I was quite impressed that I fit everything.

Space is pretty good, I've got the arm rest to store my ipod and some change, near the gears is another small drawer which flips up for some more storage, both driver and passenger side doors have nice storage space and the glove compartment is nicely organized there is a slot on the top of it to store papers and vw owner booklet so it doesn't impact storing other items in the glove compartment.

The steering wheel has full controls of the stereo and ipod, I'm able to comfortably switch between fuel monitoring options without having to take my eyes off the road. The wheel is wrapped in a nice leather, only downside is that it gets hot due to the sun shining down for so long on it. I'm planning on getting the car tinted a nice shade.

The seats are incredibly comfortable and there is a lot of leg room way more than the Mazda 3 that I used to have. I'm 6' tall and when my brother in law is in the back seat there is plenty of leg space for him considering he's just over 6' tall.

Give it a 9/10 for interior and exterior, once I get the tint and planning on putting a spoiler on the car it'll be a 10/10.

Drive: The engine is awesome but it did take sometime getting used to the DSG transmission. My other car is a 2004 G35 coupe so the drive very differently. I love the maneuverability of the jetta, the car is very responsive to my steering. The car doesn't feel heavy and sluggish at anytime. So far I'm getting about 780-850km per tank of gas all driving is 100% city. Planning on doing a road trip in August to NYC so lets see if I get the 1100km on a single tank then.

I give the drive a 9/10, loss of a point for getting used to DSG.

Here's what I paid for the car in case you're interested:

Thanks to the above poster for your additional information :) It's nice to have people read about both the top of the line (yours) and the base model (mine) of the same car.. A lot of times professional auto journalist are given the absolute top of the line car to test, so it's not exactly reflective of what people will actually buy..

I'll post more stuff about maintenance/reliability as time goes on, as I've just passed the 500 km mark.. so far it has been a nice drive, no complains so far.. my understanding is that the MK5 has been relatively reliable save for some troubles in early DSG/2.0T cars..

Yes I could've gone with the finance options, but then I won't be getting 4k off MSRP.. I guess at the end of the day it's what you are comfortable with..

I'm sure there are deals to have for the Jettas right now, as they are clearing them out for the 2011 models... my thoughts is that if I could get the TDI base for 21k, you can most likely get the 2.5 base for a bit below 20k.. IMO that's not a bad deal at all.. the 2.5 might have lower resale values in the long run, but if you plan to drive the car to the ground, it might not matter much at the end :)

The reviews are out there for the 2011 model.. read them up and see if you like the 2011 or 2010... seems that most reviews have said that the build quality and materials have gone down a little bit (to achive the price point I guess) but is mostly still ahead of its class.. I have not seen one in real person so I can't give any solid opinions..
I'm sorry to post three different replies to three different quotes, I don't know how to do the multi-quoting in one message.....

Prior to purchasing the 2010 Jetta I read about how VW was planning on lowering costs so that they could offer a cheaper 2011 Jetta. I for one am not a fan of cheaper materials and I really like the quality of the 2010 model. The interior doesn't feel cheap at all everything is secure and nice to the touch.

Of course we'll see what happens as time goes by and I'll post updates here too with regards to maintenance and any other issues.

One question though for the OP when you run your wipers does the driver side make contact with the frame of the window? Yesterday there was a heavy rain fall and I was running my wipers at full speed and I thought for a moment that it seemed to be making contact with the body of the car.

When I got home and it stopped raining it seems that the wiper comes within 1-2 mm of the frame but I'm wondering when its wet and raining if it hits. I'd hate to have the wiper leave scrub marks against the white.

I haven't noticed my wipers making contact with the body, but if yours is doing that, I am sure it's covered by warranty
