My cloud 4tb: replace google photos

Anyone here use the iOS app, wd my cloud?

Would this be a good alternative to google photos to back up video and photos from phones. My guess is we lose the gphotos search and image recongization

Looking for easy solution without desktop

4tb my cloud is listed at $215 on Amazon. I see some older threads from 1-4 years ago at 150$ however no solid links if it’s My cloud, or other external drives

Take a look at what MS offers, unless you donor course need 4tb.

You can get office and 1tb of OneDrive for $79 a year

I believe that is the best value, cause you also get the office 365.

If it’s just one user Amazon Photos is good if you have Prime. Still unlimited storage

I am using mycloud. The new version is called mycloud home. Not sure if they fixed/improved on the cons I mentioned below.

To me, the photo backup is just okay.
Pros:
- It is a free personal cloud, no other fees to pay
- It is a safer and more private alternative
- Orignal quality backup

Cons:
- No smart searching features like google
- I am using an iPhone. From time to time, the auto backup will stop working, then you have to resetup, and it will backup all the photos on your phone again. Over time, you will see repeated pictures on your drive. This will happen too when you change your phone.

Since the WD device is a single drive unit, you still need a copy elsewhere in case the drive fails (which at some point it will ...).
As others have pointed out, for 80$/y for MS Office 365 you get 1TB which is great. Have your WD drive sync with OneDrive and you have a solid backup scheme.
Google drive is also a solid option where for 20$US/y you get 100gig (or 30$ for 200g) which may be sufficient for you, especially if you don't need an O365 licence.

I'm giving another vote for MS 365.

I have the family version, so I could set up my wife and in-laws also with 1TB each.

Been using it for many years now. Happy with it for a simple solution to just automatically backup photos. It is synced to my desktop at home, so I can keep a copy on my HDD.

I also use Google Photos. More for the convenience of always having access to my photos. Not pure backup. One Drive is not great for trying to browse those GBs of photos...
It will be a shame to lose Google Photos. But we have almost a year to think about it. I also have a Pixel phone. So for now I believe unlimited is not changing on this phone, like non-pixel accounts.
