My toyota at highway speed reved at 4000rpm and stayed there even on cruise??

My toyota at highway speed reved at 4000rpm and stayed there even on cruise??

so i was coming onto a highway. and set my cruise at 100km/h while i was traveling roughly 50 or so the car got up to speed on its own.

it reved pretty hard at around 4000rpm and when i got to to 100 on the cruise...it STAYED at 4000rpm for a solid 5-10seconds roughly even though at that point i was on fairly flat road.

i slightly tapped the accelerator pedel to see if it would change and it finally downshifted and the rpm went back down normally.

this has never happened before and only has 12,000 km on the dial.

its a toyota highlander.

should i be concerned?

Seems somewhat normal, as you had the speed set at 100km and the vehicle had to get up to your set point from 50km/hr.

It should downshift more quickly than 10 seconds. Maybe one or two. Is it possible you had it in sport mode? Does it have a kickdown button under the throttle that you may have pressed?
Were you carrying a heavy load or towing?
Might not hurt to check your trans fluid level to be safe.

my old Mazda protege would do that when cold...it wouldnt shift into overdrive unless it reached a certain temperature

next time try doing it on your own without the cruise to see if it happens too
go at 50, then floor the accelerator to get to 100, then keep at 100.

its a country highway. there was a small village which u need to drop to 50 and then back up to 100 when u exit the village. this wasnt like the 401
