Nail on sidewall. Replace one or all four?

I got a nail on the sidewall on the passenger rear tire of my awd suv (2014 Mazda CX-5).I was told it cannot be patched and all tires need replacement to prevent damage to the differential. Here is my question. I found the exact brand and make of the tire (new -Bridgestone ecopia all seasons ). The tire depth of the other 3 tires are 8/32 . Can I use a single new tire to replace the bad tire? How much of a thread difference is considered as bad?

Thanks in advance

From 2014 Owner's Manual 4-87:

Tires
-- When replacing tires, always replace all front and rear tires at the same time.
-- All tires must be of the same size, manufacture, brand and tread pattern. Pay particular attention when equipping snow or other types of winter tires.
-- Do not mix tread-worn tires with normal tires.

Looks like by points 1 and 3 Mazda says you must replace all tires together. Other manufacturers range from 2/32 to 4/32 difference is allowable but some also say what Mazda says.

What is the tread depth on the brand new Bridgestone tire you're looking at? Knowing this will tell you how big the difference is. Personally if it was 2/32 or less I'd just buy the one tire.

Just 1 same brand tire is fine.

Each tire expands/contract at different rates. ie.: one side of the car being in the sun
Each corner of the car has a different weight. ie.: one vs two passangers
Meaning each wheel has a slightly different diameter all the time anyway.

PS: I would pressure the shop doing the replacement to send the tire back to manufacturer as most cover that under pro-rated warranty. Most shops with exception of Costco don't bother.

Yup, one tire is fine. This whole thing over AWD needing 4 even tires is so silly. I have asked this many times, has anyone ever had, or even know someone who has ever experienced catastrophic drivetrain failure where the CONCLUSIVE cause of failure was 1x new tire, and 3x nearly new tires? Assuming 10/32 to 11/32 for a typical new tire, 8/32 is still pretty new.

Depends how worn the tires are. If they're fairly new just replace the one. If they're older and almost due for replacement then its easy decision to just replace all 4.

It's a tough decision when they're half way through their life, although some places will shave the new tire down to match.

Not sure if shops actually do this, but I've heard you can get that one tire shaved to match the other 3 tires. This would eliminate the uneven tread issue without having to buy new tires.

I also kinda think replacing tires in pairs has kinda just been a way for tire shops to sell more tires. I've had a tire shop warranty a tire that had a defect and suddenly it was ok to have one new tire and one used tire.

I would get 1 tire to replace the damaged tire and start shopping for a set of 4 let's say for next spring when you take off your winters (assuming you have them).
Quite a few people I know hated those ecopias for the ride and handling.

Speaking of Ecopias......last day for Costco Bridgestone promotion.

Edit: Nvm, promotion only applies to set of 4.
