Natural gas bill doubled in one month! Leak? Error?

So my average natural gas bill for the Winter months is around $100-120, and about 180-250 cubed m usage.

Today for March I got the shock of the week showing a $233 gas bill and 499 cubed m usage. March was warmer than Jan/Feb so the furnace was running less. I also work from home and haven’t been smelling any rotten egg smell. Could there be a leak on the outside at the meter? Or a bad reading?

It looks like your Feb reading was an estimate and may have been under estimated. Otherwise go check the meter and see if the most recent reading matches.

Do you submit your own readings? Maybe you/they missed some and previously were on estimates, now it's caught up.

Not so easy there Ma…
If that's Enbridge, every second reading is an estimate which can make for unusual bills sometimes. I do my own readings and submit them.

Meter is about 10 cubic m higher than what is stated on the bill. So the meter reading matches for March

Huh… I am today years old learning that Enbridge comes to physically visit every other month to get actuals on meter reading. So the consensus is that my February bill was likely actually unusually high compared to their estimate and March played catch up big time.

New homeowner? You can submit your own reading if you want more accurate results.

My Feb reading was also higher than last year. Jan Heating degree days was +10% this year, Feb was +4%, March -10%

Personally, I find it simpler/easier to just go on Equal Billing. No worries about variability month to month and no need to submit readings. I only look at the meter once when they do the true up in August just to make sure things stay on point.

Did you get a bill each month? If not ... it is NOT a double usage. I haven't received a bill in 2 months ... and called them ... they said certain areas were hit with a system issue ... I'm expecting a bill for 3 months usage now.

I noticed that in February ... I provide meter readings monthly online ... and normally get my invoice emailed on or about the 18th of each month.
