Need advice: new car ready but an accessory is on back order

I just received an email from the dealership that my new car is ready to be picked up but one of the accessory (trailer hitch) which I asked from the very beginning is in back order. Big hassle because I had to go there again for installation when the part becomes available (no mention of ETA). Any advice on what I should do? My family already have plans to hit the trails this weekend so we are really disappointed.

Well they may be able to remove it from an existing hitch on another vehicle and install it for you?

Your options are pretty limited, assuming they can't just pull one out of their butts... Or off another vehicle, as someone previously mentioned. They could also try another dealership, I guess.

You can take the car, and get in writing that they still owe you the hitch. And try to negotiate some sort of "perk" for the hassle of bringing it back in for a day.
You can leave the car, and wait for the part. But you may be without the car for an extended period.
You could try negotiating a discount for taking the car without the hitch, and get your own hitch put on. But that puts you back to having to take the car into another shop.

If you need the hitch to "hit the trails", perhaps ask if they have a suitable loaner vehicle with a hitch that you can use for the time you need it.

On second thought is it a good idea to tow something on a new vehicle before breaking in the engine?

I would just rent a vehicle in the meantime and baby the car for now
