Need Moca Help

Hi Everyone,

Background:
3 story home
purchased 2.0 moca adapters
Rogers internet
Use TP link DECO for routers/wifi

I have the coax coming from the wall into the moca adapter for the in part, then i have another coax cable going from the cat tv to the rogers modem.
Ethernet on Moca goes to the deco puck.

Second adapter is in basement, i tried to connect the ethernet from it to the deco, at first it worked, but right away it stopped working.

I checked the main coax lines in the basement and noticed the splitter being used is the antronix 2 way splitter 5-1002mhz. EDIT: i think this line to the basement is for one COAX cable in the basement and one outlet in the basement. I'm assuming the main line must be somewhere else than. Because in the basement i can only see a 2 way splitter, yet i have coax ports in every bedroom in the house + living room (so 4 rooms outside basement).

Can someone point out what my issue is, is it the splitter?

I think it could be your splitter. Look for some MOCA 2.0 compatible splitters I think the mhz range is higher at 1675mhz . When the telus guy came to install moca adapters at my place a few years back he kept all the coaxial wiring but had to make sure the splitters was the proper type.

This reddit post explains it ok.. link: https://www.reddit.com/r/HomeNetworking ... splitters/

OP.....one thing I haven't seen mentioned is a 'filter'. Put a filter on the line coming into the basement from the street, before you attach the splitter. Personally, I would have gone for a MOCA 2.5, and make sure the mhz of the splitter is higher too i.e. 2k+

So I somewhat got an output signal from the ports.
I turned on moca on the Rogers modem, now the other coax ports can do output.

Everyone keeps mentioning filters but I have no idea where to add it.
As far as I can tell only ONE outside line is coming to the basement and being split into two and going to 2 coax ports in basement.

I see 3 black coax looking lines coming out of the junction box, I believe ones going to basement since the basement ones black.

there’s also one one white coax cable going from junction box to I think the master bedroom walkin closet, in the closet I see a white cable coming in (no jacks here).

The living room where the modem has a jack, but I have no idea where it’s wired to. I’m assuming one of the 3 black lines from junction box goes behind the walls to living one.

One of the bedrooms on the third floor, has a jack, but again I have no idea where it goes to. Maybe the remaining black line from outside comes here?

So in summary:
There are 4 lines coming out of junction box
1 white which I believe goes straight to walk in closet since only a long cable there no jack.
1 black, I think ones going to basement since I see a black one here.
1 black going to living room jack?
1 black going to secondary bedroom jack?

Would I just add one filter before my modem and one for the basement?
I’m not planning to use the cable in walk in closet but want to see use moca for backhaul to deco in the secondary bedroom. Would I add a filter here as well?

Or can I force my way into the junction box and add a filter there?

This is what they mean by point of entry filter. You place it on the first coaxial point that is coming into your house and it stops your signal from leaking back out from your network into the neighbourhood.

Alright so I got the junction box opened up and see this:
Image

Is that fat black thing at the start a filter or do I still need to add one?
Also these splitters have a low range so can I just replace them all with the ones from Amazon that are 5-2500mhz?

I’m not sure what that black thing is, but if that’s the line coming into your house from the street, that is where you want to put your POE filter.

Yes, those splitters aren’t MoCa rated to you would need to replace them with something else with a higher range.

thanks i ordered a filter and a 6 way splitter (https://www.amazon.ca/Neoteck-Splitter- ... NrPXRydWU=)

would it cause any issues if i have the line going out to modem also connected directly to the splitter?

Heres how I'm imagining the setup:
Line in from outside -----poe filter-----line in of 6 way splitter----all other lines connected to out port of splitter

will report back on progress once the items come in

That should work.

ok i got the splitters and filter

so here's my setup:

outside line in-----POE filter-----6 way splitter

First i just had one line from 6 way splitter going to modem and turning on moca functionality, but i was getting completely garbage speed. (120mb MAX and kept going doing each time i was doing my tests). I then took turned off moca functionality on modem.

i then used one more splitter for the line going into living room where modem is, one out port goes to moca adapter, other one goes to rogers modem. Ethernet cable plugged in from moca adapter to rogers modem.
in basement i removed any filters so it should be direct line from outside, i plugged in moca adapter here and am only getting 300mb MAX. Before with the non moca compliant splitters i was getting 500mb.

I tried connecting the outside line coming in to living room to in port of moca adapter and used another cable to go from out port to the modem, but it was giving me issues.

Im pretty close to giving up on this, and just sticking with wifi.

Another update, i removed the splitter in living room and just did this:
line in>moca adapter>modem, then i plugged in the ethernet cable from moca adapter to router. This would limit my speed in other rooms on moca. So i removed the splitter and got rid of the moca adapter and just turned on moca settings in modem. Other rooms got full speed when i tested by connecting to laptop, i only tested them one at a time, was fine.

But when i try to connect ethernet from moca adapters in other rooms to my deco puck, it wouldnt switch to ethernet backhaul. I unplugged the 2 non primary pucks and set the main puck to access point mode then turned on other 2 pucks in other rooms, now everything stopped working.

Any reason why my moca adapters arent feeding each of the pucks? Did i mess up the access point process?
