Need a new water tank, where to buy/install

Hello,

My water tank is leaking, it is over 10 years old, I am thinking to get a new one. I got a quote from a plumber for about 2000, it seems high to me as I seem to recall reading people here getting it done under 1000.
I am wondering where can I get a good value with reliable service, is it a good idea to get Lowes or Home depot to install, how much installation fee does it usually cost?

Go on chat w HD or Lowes and inquire.

They have deals on HWT every now and then.

So one of the reasons why a separate company is going to cost more is because they may be using a better quality product. For example @newlyborn who is a highly recommended HVAC company here on RFD sells hot water tanks but the ones that he sells are commercial grade so they are higher quality, easier to get parts for if needed in the future. The other option you could look into is a Tankless hot water unit. Its much smaller, takes up less room and you always have hot water ready to go (so you wont run out) Also depending on your current setup you may need to replace pipes with current up to code ones which will be an extra cost.

If you want to get another quote you can reach out to @newlyborn you can see all the positive reviews here about him and his company - new-furnace-air-conditioner-humidifier-time-2322131/25/

I got a new water heater from Lowes on sale for about $900+tax 3 years ago. But with the installation by a licensed gas fitter, the total was like $1800. So if you get a quote for $2k today, it's cheap knowing the inflation for the last 3 years.

Not so easy there Ma…
Price is going to vary depending on whether you are looking at an electric tank or a natural gas model. Electric is less expensive. If you're talking natural gas then a naturally aspirated model is less expensive than a power vent. So you want to compare apples to apples.

I see lowes installation price starting from 299, when I did online chat with them, they only pointed to the appointment page.

So the real installation price is a lot higher than 299 ? The plumber told me the tanks in the stores have many plastic parts, but I am still not sure what that means.

It means the plastic parts are cheap they are more likely to crack/leak etc. The higher quality tanks have Metal/Brass parts which are much better and less likely to leak.

Here is an example of a good quality unit that the HVAC installer I mentioned above sells along with other brands.

You haven't indicated what type of tank it is you're looking at. If it's a power vent, they can be the most expensive to hook up. As an example, should you actually have a power vent and the existing exhaust pipe is black, it must be replaced with the white exhaust pipe to be up to code. That would be an additional expense. Regarding the plastic parts, some members have had those valves (TP and drain) leak or fail. Worse yet some have had them leak and when attempting to replace them with brass parts the plastic valve snapped off!

To increase life, a water tank should be drained using the drain valve occasionally to get the sediment out. To maximize life, depending on the water hardness in your area, the anode should be replaced every X number of years.

OP: are you inquiring about a well tank (that pressurizes water in homes with wells and submersible pumps) or a hot water tank (which is what we're all assuming)?

If it's a HWT, is it gas, oil, or electric?

FWIW, a (well) water tank shouldn't be leaking at 10 years and unless you have very corrosive water and unless an incredibly cheap HWT, neither should it.

FYI, my water tank is a powered vent version. The installation cost also include taking my rental tank away to return for me.

I decided to purchase my water heater from Lowes because they sell an extended warranty to cover both Parts and Labour for 6 years total.
Here are the details:

GTA area
$820.00
A.O. Smith Signature 40- Gallon 6-year limited Short Natural gas Water Heater
Item#: 879346

$370 delivery & installation
$59 haul away the old water heater
$79.97 Extended Labour warranty to 6 years to match parts warranty from manufacturer.
The purchase was made on April 2022. It took 8 days from date of purchase to the installation date. I did tell them I was not in a hurry.
The installation was quite professional.

Please ask and have Lowes give you in writing how they are going to deal with warranty parts / labour. At times it is very shady and highly inconvenient which prompts customers to look for an alternate repairs out of their own pocket. Who would want a technician to show up after a week when there is no hot water.

If you are in GTA, it should cost you way below 3K including installation , vent upgrade and leaving your old tank on curb / garage.

Who did you contact for the price it seems pretty high. There is a RFD HVAC Contractor here that you may want to contact for a quote which should be less.
