Neill Blomkamp "District 10" - sequel to 2009 sci-fi cult classic, "District 9"

District 9 movie thread

In interviews for 'District 9', both star Sharlto Copley and director Neil Blomkamp revealed that they would both be interested in a sequel to the already-buzzed and well-reviewed District 9 if the opportunity presents itself

In February 2021, Neill Blomkamp revealed that he and writing partners Sharlto Copley and Terri Tatchell are in the process of writing the screenplay for the sequel

Speaking to IGN after Blomkamp announced he's joined game developer Gunzilla to make a multiplayer shooter, the director touched on his recently-announced sequel to 2009 sci-fi cult classic, District 9
"That script continues to be written. It's looking good. It took a decade to figure out, to come up with a reason why to make that film as opposed to just make a sequel."

As for what that reason is, it seems that while South African history (most particularly apartheid) was the impetus to make District 9, District 10 will be looking to events in the US: "There was a topic in American history that the second I realized that that fit into the world of District 9, it felt like an awesome way to do a sequel. So yeah, it continues to be developed and it's getting a lot closer." Blomkamp didn't go into detail about what that topic would be.

I guess as time marches on everything becomes a cult film but I remind the forum that D9 cleared $200 mil at box office AND was nominated for a Best Picture Oscar (not really overlooked in its time like most cult movies)

I'm looking forward to it if they can swing a sequel, but I hope Neill Blomkamp and Terri Tatchell improve on their writing. While District 9 was great, the dialogue in Blomkamp's other movies isn't great. I think one of the reasons District 9 did so well is because Sharlto Copley ad-libbed most of his dialogue. Copley went over the top in his ad-libbing sometimes, but overall it added a lot to the movie.
