New Car fees.

Hello everyone,

First post. Hope to get some clarification on final invoice fees on a new Kia Seltos the GF is buying. She has not signed the final invoice yet.

First the dreaded mystery admin fees 500$. Got some info and that is a hard limit and is set by Kia , my new Kia had a 0.00$ cost for its admin fee, different dealer, so obviously it's negotiable. When dealer was questioned replies, "It is charged by all dealers and can not be removed."

The big concern is the lien registration fee for 610$, when she called dealer about it was a fee charged by the bank. My fee was only for 135$, that's one hell of a difference. I cant seem to find any information about what banks charge to register lien.

Does anyone know what the costs should be ?

Any help greatly appreciated.

That's ridiculously high for lien registration ... it ought to be around the $55 range.

Maybe go deal with another dealer.

Doesn't matter if the dealer shows the admin fee as a line item or not, you always pay it. Some people will tell you they didn't pay it, but they actually did. Dealer just didn't show it explicitly in the price breakdown and it was rolled into smaller overall discount on the car itself. Each dealer sells a car for a set amount and how they arrive at that number doesn't really matter.

Best thing to do is compare a few places and simply look at bottom line price before Tax. Some dealers with the admin fee will have a lower price than dealers with no admin fee. The lien registration fee sucks and I'm not sure about that. I've never seen it explicitly stated in all my car purchases. $610 seems very high. I assume this isn't through Kia finance?

Car is financed through RBC mine was BMO. Dealer tells GF that my lien fee was hidden in the cost of borrowing amount, its getting very very shady...

She has given a 500 $ deposit but has not signed the final bill of sale ...... yet.

Here are the actual fees charged within each province for the registration of a lien. Anything more would be covering the institutions expenses(?):

Just use single out the door price plus HST to negotiate.

Don't matter if they charge you admin, green or whatever fees. All you have to do with your single number is to find a reasonable number like invoice price + percentage markup + freight/pdi or use MSRP - preferred discount + freight/pdi.

Why put a deposit if no bill of sale?

Your deposit is condition to nothing with no bill of sale. Disappointed But Relieved Face

I walked out of a dealership because they wanted to causally walk me over to their debit machine for a deposit of $1000 before i had even signed anything. I said why would I just give you $1000 without documentation, especially since we have no previous relationship.

Went to another dealer and paid the same price without putting down a deposit until the final sales agreement was signed.
Please don’t confuse my kindness for weakness.

If she is going to sign and finalize it, then just enjoy the car as there is nothing she can do now

You pretty much have 3 options now:

1. Go and try to get your 500 back and go to another dealer. Likely they'll refuse.
2. Forfeit your 500
3. Sign the papers and consider a lesson learned.

It's too late the moment you paid the deposit(unless you specifically stated it as refundable)

If i do the same to you and hand write you a draft but no signature, no condition, are you going to give me $500 right now? If so, you will have a line up at your house.

Seriously, why hand written? They have a beautiful showroom and everything so modernize and yet for a business agreement, they write you a hand draft and take $500 from you?

By giving $500 and nothing blinded, you are follow their game. You come here to ask Questions and means things are not confirmed and can be changing, You are losing negotiating power by already giving them $500,

Good luck

Exactly, I did the same when a salesman ask me to put $1000 down before we even negotiating the deal.
They see me at the door 30 seconds later.

Incorrect and you obviously don't know anything about accounting.

Do your research. Know the pricing. Get the admin fee removed after negotiations and then you will know that you are definitely not paying it...or go to a dealer that doesn't charge it in the first place and then it is even easier to confirm it.
