New Fridge LG?

Looking for a new French door 36" wide fridge with water and ice on the door... in stainless. I have a GE Profile that served me for 17 years... not to bad.

Costco has some nice LG fridges I'm looking at, but I came across a class action law suit for compressor failure 2014-2019.

Did a little research online, but have not really found out if the problem has been corrected as of yet.

Before I go fridge shopping, thought I check if anyone has had major issues with LG fridges.

Thanks

Compressor issue they claim is addressed, and they offer a very hood compressor warranty to try and show that. Their fridges are fine.

Why not get another GE Profile? They still make them and they’re still decent. Most fridges now kinda suck quality wise but Profile is probably a bit better than the norm.

I have LG: dishwasher, fridge, washing machine & dryer. All bought new within the past 7 years and have had issues with each one of the appliances with leaks or something breaking. Will never buy LG again.

What price point were they? High, low or mid range?

Take a look at KitchenAid as well, we've been told by friends and family that they're pretty solid. They're owned by Whirlpool so parts won't be an issue when repairs are needed.

I was looking at LG 36" / 28 cu.ft. at Costco for 3,700. but I think I'm going to rethink that. KitchenAid 36' / 26.8 cu.ft. is 1,000 more and a tad smaller for the same thing. I may just have to bite the bullet.... I don't need the extra problems, but dam 4 grand with tax is pushing it.

Maybe LG has lowered there price to try and bring back customers they lost due to the compressor issues.

People buy LG and Samsung appliances at their own peril. Enough people here have shared personal and/or anecdotal experiences with both brands. The consensus has been, stay away.

If you watch cbc marketplace durable goods aka appliances don’t last 10 years anymore. LG and Samsung work hard in customer satisfaction but the truth is their products break down and you can’t buy replacement parts yourself. With the cost of repair, you’re close to 50% the way in buying another fridge.

I’d stay away from LG and Samsung in kitchen appliances. I have an LG washer and it’s been great for last 5 years. GE profile kitchen appliances are good even though owned by Haier since 2016. Kitchenaid isn’t as good as it used to, feels cheaper. But so far so good as well.

If you want reliable then skip features. No screen, no wifi, no door in door, no ice maker, no water dispenser. Avoid dual compressors. Avoid complex control boards.

Avoid samsung as they tend to have issues with their defrost and drain. LG is a bit tough to find parts for though have heard reliability is improved.

I got a basic whirlpool and it’s a tank. Five years and works like new. I’d expect another 5-10 from it for that since it’s got relatively few points of failure. No frills, just keeps food cold.

Just don't get a Samsung and you're off to a good start.

I am on a hunt too and it seems most of the brands went to $hit. Does not matter if you spend 2k or 5k on the fridge. I just saw the video on youtube in taking apart that famous LG compressor and by reading the comments it looks like LG did not solve the issue and their 2020-2021 line even worse.

I guess I am just going to repair my old trustworthy Frigidare which is 12 years old and working as day one…..

Samsung even worse with few designs flows which they would not address plus their compressors are crap too

I guess I am going to buy NA manufacturer, at least there are support and parts available

Gave away our 4 year old 30" LG refrigerator. No issues at all.

No issues with our LG washer and dryer.

Recently I bought a 36" counter depth LG with a price match and 10% off also, at Home Depot with 24 months no interest on my HD card.

The fridge was $3100 at HD and 2700 at Canadian Appliances. So I paid $2700 less 10%.

Our home came with an LG French door fridge. At the 8 year mark since date of manufacture the compressor failed. Good thing is LG offers an out of warranty flat fee service. I believe I paid around $250 or so to have a tech come and install a new compressor and circuit board to match the newer model compressor.

I would’ve been incredibly upset if that service was not there as I would either be stuck with a huge repair bill (and not knowing how well the repair will hold up) or having to buy a new fridge with better reliability.

For $250 to extend the life of the fridge with a new compressor is a decent insurance policy against LG compressor failure.

That one pretty much, got it 2018. I still have it, it's basically spotless. Not super fancy, but it works great. I'm trying to think of downsides... I guess it's a bit shorter than some other 72 inch fridges, it's about 67 inches high if that matters. It's 30 inch across, standard depth. Real stainless front. No ice maker, no dispenser, single compressor. Noise level is average - it's not annoyingly loud, but not silent, just normal fridge sound. You actually CAN access the compressor coils at the bottom by easily removing the base grill, which is great to keep things quiet and running longer, just jam a duster in there twice a year to get the dust out. Made in the US, plenty of parts available.

I'll note I paid about 2/3rds that posted web price. I'm sure in store you can get it a fair bit cheaper today, but man inflation, ouch.

I'm probably going to sell that fridge in a few weeks actually, we'll see.

I think you probably still have old style LG compressor, the new fails in year or 2 mark.

We just bought a Bosch 36” counter depth fridge with French doors. Has yet to get delivered. Apparently it’s good if you can believe the reviews.

How do you know when LG changed the style of their compressor?

The previous owner left behind a basic LG top freezer fridge and I think it was from early 2010 which sits in the basement now. We replaced it with an LG French door fridge back in 2018. Based on previous owner fridge and my research at the time, LG fridge was ok. It was stay away from Samsung fridges, washer and dishwasher (anything water related).
