I don't think the concept is new. "Bad USB" has been a thing for a while. Kinda why you don't go plugging and charging your devices in with random cables in public places.

This. It's always an interesting concept to see and read about but it's definitely old.

This too. Bring a "USB Condom" if you must or preferably your own charging hardware.
It's obviously cumbersome, but you should never trust USB.
Even if it isn't full of hacks, there's also USB killers.
