New mid-range or old flagship

I'm looking for a phone as a gift for my dad, an upgrade from his first smartphone, a $120 BLU Advance 5.0 (1gb/8gb)

Looking into my options, I came to wonder what are the tradeoffs between getting a new mid-range or a two-year old flagship. Here are two options, to make it concrete :
Moto G7 for 400 with taxes
Samsung S8 for 540 with taxes (which I own myself)
Should I expect a significantly lower performance from the G7? Both have 4/64, but the S8 has a better processor. What would you do in the same situation? I'm trying to garner opinions, thoughts advice etc. I will not consider anything more expensive than the S8.

Thanks!

What about something like the LG G7 One? I've had no complaints so far and the price is right. Not sure if the Wow Mobile/Koodo trick is available in Quebec though.

Upgrading from a BLU, LG G5 or G6 should be plenty enough since I don't think your dad is going to play games on it.

Not sure what the Koodo trick is, but unlocked the G7 is quite expensive.

I actually was looking into the LG G6 (my wife has one) but can only find it for a decent price through eBay. I guess that's an option.

Also found a Moto X4 (3gb/32gb) for very cheap at B&H, 235 all in.

If it were me, I would be looking at something in the $200-250 price range, unless he has complained that his phone sucks.

If I were you , I'll look into those brand new in box LG Q6 or LG G5 that people are selling at BST forum here, those are free phone from Zoomer wireless that people joined but have their own phone. I had a HTC M8 but the battery is dying, I sold it and bought a very good condition used G5 with case for $90 and it is faster and better than the M8. If your father is coming from that BLU, the LG G5 is light years ahead. Here is a seller from Montreal https://forums.redflagdeals.com/brand-n ... #p30536758

Yeah, that's the thing, he has been starting to complain. The BLU served him well, but eventually 1gb/8gb is just not enough

Sorry, I was quite vague :) .

Yeah, I can understand 1/8 being not enough, but like others are saying, any namebrand is going to be an upgrade. There's no need to go $500. (Personally, I think $500-600 should be the max for a flagship phone. Like Louis Rossman is basically saying, manufacturers are jacking up prices to $1000 for minimal gain because people are suckers.)

But going back to your original question, I would probably get an old flagship, since I don't do a lot with my phone, so I don't need the wow specs. I would prefer a nice build and decent cameras.

OP if you're in Ottawa anytime soon, I literally just received an LG G5 from Zoomer BNIB today. $200 and it's yours

Samsung S7 is what I bought for my wife last year. Found a brand new one at London Drugs. She loves it and I like the flat screen over my curved S8.
