New T&T Supermarket Opens at Landsdowne Mall, Richmond, New T&T Opened in South Calgary

T&T Press Release:

T&T Supermarkets is pleased to announce plans to open two new stores in the Greater Vancouver Area by the end of 2018. The stores will be located in the Lansdowne Centre at 8311 Lansdowne Road and at 2220 Kingsway Street in Kensington Gardens. Since T&T Supermarket will be celebrating its 25th anniversary in 2018, the big leap of opening these new stores also marks another great milestone.

With a focus on Asian cuisine, T&T Supermarkets offer a wide variety of fresh produce, meat, seafood, grocery items, and ready to consume Asian meals. Always looking for new and unique items, T&T Supermarkets is known to be at the forefront of Asian food innovation.

“We are thrilled to be opening two new stores in Vancouver next year,” says, Tina Lee, CEO of T&T Supermarkets.” Both these stores have special meaning for me. Richmond is a bustling centre for the Chinese community in the Lower Mainland, so opening a store in the Lansdowne Centre, just made sense for us. Having grown up on the eastside of Vancouver, opening a store in the new Kensington Gardens development is a dream come true for me.”

Launched in 1993 in Vancouver, today T&T Supermarkets operates 23 stores in British Columbia, Alberta and Ontario

The new Kingsway location is pretty big too. Used to be a Canadian Tire.

The lansdowne location has been known since last summer. I'm surprised they are taking well over a year for renovations.

As a side note, I guess they realized one of the keys to success is plenty of free, easy to navigate parking. The one next to the oval has a terribly designed parking lot and the marine gateway location only reimburse the parking fee if you spend enough and park at their stalls.

I notice whenever a T&T store opens there is a lot of excitement IRL and here on RFD
(Just like when a Costco opens)

Have never been in a T&T store... although they did open one up in Ottawa a few years ago

Going there would be quite an out of the way trip for me... so wondering if any T&T regulars would care to share what makes the store so great or what are your favourite features / items / Purchases

As it might be a neat way to spend a Winter’s Weekend Afternoon...

Think of every small asian market you've ever visited and combine them all. Live seafood, butchery, bakery, hot meals, pre-made/packaged meals, produce, dry goods, snacks, drinks, all in wide variety, all in one place.

I guess Weston's is closing some Superstores as they are not as profitable, but opening these 2 T n T's. I can see why as T n T prices are overall higher than Superstores, so definitely way more profitable. Sometimes I like to get their garlicky tasting seaweed in the already prepared foods section. There are other food from the prepared section that I would get sometimes. I usually would have to get kimchi from T n T as Superstore doesn't carry it, especially the non spicy kimchi. The Kingsway location is on the way home for me so I can only see myself going there if there's ample parking. I think it won't beat the convenience of Metrotown's ample parking though. I have never been to the Marine Dr. location as that's pay parking. I would have preferred a H mart instead of a T n T though as I like the side dishes H mart has better.

I am sure T&T did market research before deciding opening these 2 new stores. They figured there is a big enough Chinese population in Richmond to support 3 T&T Supermarkets.

As for the Kingsway store, that is a perfect location for a T&T. It is in the middle of Vancouver with a huge Chinese population in that area. The area bounded by Victoria, Nanaimo, Knight, has one of the biggest Asian population in Vancouver.

Not only that but there is no other Supermarket in that area besides Save on Foods at Kingsway and Knight. Also, that neighbourhood has many new condo projects being built so more density mean more customers for the store.

The only people who are going to suffer is the all the small Chinese stores along Victoria Drive. I am sure T&T will draw away some of their customers.

T&T isn't cheap; however, they are busy. So, those smaller stores should be able to compete on price.

Most if not all of the Richmond and east Van provincial ridings are majority Chinese. In the latter, south east Van excepted as it is East Indian.

Is the T&T on 1st/Renfrew sill open?

Which they had one on Vancouver Island as RCSS is pretty poor for ethnic selection but we do have Fairway Markets and a few Chinese-run independents.

Nice to know!

I prefer Foody World though. The prices seem cheaper and they carry more authentic Chinese goods.

I'm guessing that they may throw in a joe fresh department?

Tnt is slowly transitioning store by store to bag your own groceries with new locations better prepared for that sort of thing, so I'm guessing that the existing Osaka supermarket may be up for a reno. Literally too much traffic right now for a reno.

The marine drive location has two belts like no frills and superstore.

Divert some traffic away or have another one up while they temp close the other one to do reno and put in new structures

I didn't know there was a new Vancouver location opening, only the Richmond one. Guess I don't need to get my ass to Metrotown when it opens since it will be the closest one to me.

I can just walk there or take the #19 bus.

I don't know about the River road location but every time I go to the Yaohan location, it's like trying to navigate through my elementary school hallways after the 3 PM bell had rung. In other words, the store is crowded AF most of the time, probably because the layout in parts of the store is a friggin bottleneck. Not sure why they closed down the one across Aberdeen Center a while back; that location had ample space.

The Lansdowne location is a welcome addition to relieve some of that congestion.

Wish they would open more location in Calgary. We have two...both in the north of the city, I don't go there as it's a 60km roundtrip to visit a store, so I only go if there is something else to be done in that part of the city. The south could really use one, there are plenty of Asians in the south of Calgary.

Everyone goes to Yaohan because it's the only one in Richmond with "adequate" parking spaces. Bear in mind I'm using that term relatively. It made sense they closed down the store at President Plaza because it lacked parking spaces. Plus being next to Yaohan means everyone just went to Osaka anyways. The one next to the Oval has ample of parking but the underground parking lot is horrible. Having only 1 entrance/exit means it is a huge bottle neck whenever there's traffic. There's also a tight 90 degree turn (that rivals Crystal Mall parking lot) you have to navigate in order to reach the parking level.

In the end, most people continue to goto Yaohan because it had easier parking. Yes, I agree with you that the Landsdowne location will relieve some of the congestion.

From Richmond News:

T & T supermarket will open its third location at Lansdowne Centre on Aug. 16 following the success of its other two stores at Yaohan Centre and Hollybridge Way.

Headquartered in Richmond, the Canadian supermarket chain, which was bought out by Loblaw Companies in 2009, primarily sells Asian food.

The new Richmond store will occupy the 74,000-square-foot first floor of the former Target and Zellers stores.

At the grand opening on Aug. 16, T & T will offer free drinks and snacks, and the first 400 customers through the door will receive a gift card.

There will also be a six-foot dragon made of hundreds of pieces of sushi which customers may have the opportunity to devour.

The Landsdowne location will be the 11th T & T store in B.C. and the 26th in Canada since the company was founded 1993.
Have a nice day!

Those supermarket at Victoria and 41st (ish) have much better price for pretty much the same product (fruit, veggie, meat). With basically no parking however, I think they survive just by local (walking distance) traffic so likely no impact. I know I don’t generally go there unless I’m going to the LD there due to basically no parking. If there was, I would be more of a regular.

Lansdowne will be happy to have T&T. They draw less business than Richmond Centre and haven't had anyone in to replace the Target, Future Shop, and Home Outfitters that closed. Parking there is pretty ample and the demographics there seem to skew towards the older crowd and families. Wonder what this means for the Langley Farm Market inside Lansdowne.

The advantage T&T has over the smaller supermarkets is that they're usually cleaner, carry fresher food (due to higher turnover), and accept credit cards.

Proximity to transit will be good too. The Oval is too far from the Canada Line. Yaohan is close to Aberdeen though.
