Still $500 more than it should be, but it's good to see these coming down and being more available. The 12GB version from EVGA US is about $200 more than this after taxes. Whether that's worth it to you or not is another story.

Will you be able to find one to buy though, is the question.

What is this madness? this costs as much as a gaming laptop that plays any game at 1080P

With that being said I was looking for an entry level gaming video card for an nice i7 Desktop I have and to my surprise freaking video cards cost $500+ and they are no real gaming cards. Like a RTX 3050 costs $500

*snort* Well played.

RTX3080 were sold at RRP of $1029 at Best Buy during their Feb drop. Availability was atrocious, but there's no way any sane person should pay an extra $500 for this.

There is probably going to be an even longer chip shortage with everything that is going on in the world right now. Even if by fall the GPU prices start to come down the availability will suffer and scalping will quickly start back up. If you have a chance to get a 3xxx series card now for a "decent price", I'd get one now.

So what?

Assuming both AMD and nVidia release new generations every 18 months or so. Ok, this isn't exactly accurate but close enough to make my point... based on that nVidia will release the 5xxx series around March 2024, then the 6xxx series Sept 2025, followed by 7xxx in March 2027, and finally the 8xxx's in Sept 2028.

Personally I'm waiting on the NGR 8080 in '28... The performance then will make anything from the 3xxx series seem like an abacus in comparison.

The RTX 3050 is just a little more than a third as fast as an RTX 3080. The 3080 is 262% the performance of a 3050: https://www.techpowerup.com/gpu-specs/g ... 8-gb.c3858

Price is trending downwards. Availability is trending upwards. The Merge for Ethereum is happening soon. Intel is releasing their discrete GPU. All of these factors will come together to improve the price, availability and value of 3000 series parts. The arrival of the 4000 series will presumably bring higher performance at any given price point.

So, waiting for the 4000 series is a good 'landmark' timepoint, without invoking the silly idea of constantly waiting for the next best thing.

To put this into perspective, I paid $1099+tax for a 3080 at Memory Express in October 2020.

These companies are marking up cards above MSRP just like resellers are doing. This should be illegal and considered price fixing.

If we all stop buying cards now the Price of the 3000 cards will go down and the MSRP's of the 4000 series cards will be reasonable.
