Just did some quick math comparing this to the 10TB Seagates I bought during black friday:

2x 10TB = $451.98
$451.98/20TB = $22.60/TB

This drive: $134.99 + $18.59 tax + $15.99 shipping = $169.57
$169.57/8TB = $21.20/TB

You're only saving $1.40/TB with these drives, and you don't have the luxury of keeping it boxed after getting it in case a better deal is offered elsewhere, unless you're somehow okay with paying a restocking fee for a refund. I'd pass on these unless you need the space NOW.

Heh. Now I see why the OP in the newegg AsRock motherboard thread didn't mention shipping. I bet it was free shipping until they upped that to $5.99.

Not sure about WD blue, I believe that is the lowest line of consumer grade drives. These elements or my books contain HGST Heilum filled white label drives. These drives are fast 100mb/sec all day long. If you are shucking you may run into 3.3v issue. I did not with 8tb but I did with 10tb. I came up with a fix to modify the SATA power cable from PSU and disable 3.3.

Thanks, so these should also come with the HGST white labels and may or may not have a 3.3v? and if it has the power issue how will I know?

...damn it. I should've waited instead of pulling the trigger on the 6TB Seagate.

No need for a time machine. Like I said, if you need the space NOW, you should get these.

WD Blue are 're-branded' horrible WD Green drives, so.... I'd stay away from it...

Only WD ever to crap on me was Green 2TB... just after warranty ended...

I don't think Blues are just Greens. Greens parked the heads off the disk after a few seconds. Blues don't have that "power saving feature."

With almost 100% certainty they will be hgst enterprise white labels.

If they have the 3.3v issue you won’t see anything when you install the drive internally. New sata spec disables the drive when it sees 3.3v. Looking at the sata power connection the part with the notch is the 3.3v line. There are different methods to disable with kapton tape, molex to sata connector etc. My personal method was to identify which wire was 3.3, and back it out of the modular PSU cable.

SonicRings wrote: Hmm, looks tempting but I honestly don't think it's worth the hassle of ordering from newegg. $8 shipping plus restocking fee if you decide to refund. Very unfortunate about that, otherwise I'd have ordered one.
Not the problem for people who need the drive now... I have no intentions to ask for refund on such a great drive... and if it for some cosmic reason craps on me, it will be a warranty claim

Really? I was convinced that was the case, but...

Thanks for heads up!

Thanks, I think I have some molex to sata connectors, do I have to do anything special to them if my drive does have the issue?

I think these are really old stock as they haven’t made this model for years.

But... its not.

backing out the 3.3v pin at the connection where the sata power cable goes into the psu disables the 3.3v rail on the entire strip of sata power connectors (5).

any drives with 3.3v issue I can plug into this power cable and they are good to go.

back out 1 pin and tape back vs try and precision tape a pin on 1 drive today plus 4 drives down the road.... also if tape moves or something happens and that pin sees 3.3v my drive disappears. not worth risk for future hassle

Good enough for plex. I would have jumped on it over the 6TB bf deals
