I'm upgrading to this from a SN750, so yea its better
I owned the WD SN750 and now the Samsung 980 pro and don't notice the difference 99% of time except when doing large file transfers which is quite rare anyway. The SN750 looks like the better deal to me.

Keeping the chips cooler with a heatsink may increase longevity of the drive.

You need to write a lot sequentially to thermal throttle an SSD, not a normal workload.

The heatsink provides a bigger buffer before the SSD controller thermal throttles.

afaik, Samsung SSD's consume less energy, therefore produce less heat than WD.

Question for you: Did you add a heatsink to this or just installed it as is? I did read in the product description that it has its own cooling mechanism etc etc. but don't want to screw up the console.

It has a copper heat spreader hidden beneath its sticker and a nickel coating on the controller to control temperature.

Adding a heatsink would require removing this to make direct connection to the controller and NAND chips.

from https://thepcenthusiast.com/samsung-980 ... sd-review/
Speaking of the heatsink, the 980 Pro does have some thermal control solution as this SSD can get (really) toasty under load. I’ll show you the temps that I got in a moment. Under (extreme) workloads, thermal throttling could be an issue with these Gen4 SSDs. That’s why some M.2 Gen4 SSDs that you see on the market come with a heatsink, like the Corsair MP600 Gen4 PCIe or the Aorus NVME Gen4 SSD.

To mitigate this issue, Samsung has implemented three technologies that would help keep the temperature at bay. The 980 Pro has a heat spreader, a nickel coating on the Elpis controller, and a fine-tuned controller with advanced Dynamic Thermal Guard (DTG) technology. According to Samsung, “this trinity of excellent technologies” helps prevent the 980 Pro from overheating and maintain it’s expected performance.

I installed the following:

M.2 2280 SSD Heatsink Cooler (Green) https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B089NV5CLJ/ref ... 13A55WVHBF

I got the yellow one which is now sold out :). I made no modification, just slapped this on and installed it into the Ps5. Formatted and the moved contents from USB over to the new nvme ssd.

$230 at best buy as well.

Does anyone know when the SSD update for the PS5 will go live for everyone and not just the beta?

Thanks for confirming that fits in the PS5, especially since I already have one I haven't got around to using yet :).

I would pay for a 512GB SLC drive with this controller. Their Pro line is grabbing the wrong end of the stick now.

With a 3rd party heatsink still makes this cheaper than the 1TB SN850 heatsink version I recently bought in anticipation of extra storage for PS5 by a bit. Tempted but not in the mood to have to do all the returns and then get this done. I guess I'll suck it up the savings I missed out.

Also the 980 non pro version went down to $149 on amazon.ca as well. That just uses pci gen3
