Hopefully they're not swapping parts in these and causing big performance drops like they have been in the 970s.

Only in synthetic benchmarks and still faster than this SATA SSD

"While synthetic results showed a significant difference, the two revisions performed similarly in a real-world copy test with a 154GB video file. The old version has a smaller SLC cache, but a higher sustained write performance. Although the new version's SLC cache is 173% bigger, it offers 47% lower sustained write performance. At the end of the day, everything balanced out and the new version finished the copying process just a hairline faster than the old version."

Yes, Samsung Is Swapping SSD Parts Too

Yes, I read that article, too. In real world testing, *one single, specific use case* where the file size was not even 50% larger than the cache indicated performance may be equivalent to the old setup. They made an engineering decision to completely change the performance dynamic, hoping it won't be a problem for people. But it will. What an honest company does in this situation is not market this as the same product, but something completely new -- so there's no chance their users get screwed. But when you wanna continue to cash in on your reputation for to notch performance, sometimes there's too much greed to be honest.

Don't even understand what the point of synthetic tests are.

What really matters is the actual performance people see on their day to day computer

Standardised objective vs subjective results.
