I wouldn't touch this unless you really need a drive right now. Reviews also say they run hot, and that would corroborate my experience with a 2 TB version of this drive, which failed on me after just a couple of years. I guess it's probably also an SMR drive.

Is there a drive shortage right now?

Costco regularly sells the 8TB WD MyBook for $184.99 online with free shipping. I've previously purchased these from them for $154.99 after a $30 discount (Nov 2020) and $179.99 (April 2020). It does go in and out of stock, but they currently have some right now. I just ordered a third. These should also be CMR drives.

They have in the past for $179.99. Whether they’re in stock at any given location, I’m not sure.

Yes. You usually find a Barracuda in these enclosures.

Barracuda Pro or Exos is in the 10TB.

8TB likely to have SMR drive in it, these are also now considered a previous gen of Seagates external drives as there is a new version out now.
As far as I can tell the only real change is that it comes in a new style of case. The new case is much better airflow than this version.
There is a drive shortage at the moment, but I wouldn't touch this one.

Just built my server cabinet, but would rather wait for a 10TB CMR.... I have good experience with Seagate and have been using my current 10TB drive for past 2 years torrenting 24/7 and serving Plex files.

Black Friday it is.

They've had them in store for as low as $125 at times too.

My Synology NAS just started alarming because one of my 5 drives in a 1-drive fault tolerance set up has completely degraded so I don't have the luxury of waiting for a deal, etc. The minimum replacement size I need is 8TB. Before I pull the trigger on this, does anyone have any alternatives they'd recommend instead?
