My personal photo/video library is sitting at 7TB right now, and it grows pretty consistently, especially during trips/vacation and family events.

When it comes to capturing memories I don't skimp.

Sweet. Almost pulled the trigger for a few @ $259, this morning, so this is welcome news. Appreciate it

Usually dips to 219, but with inflation who knows if that'll continue. as an aside, if you're looking for best price per TB, it goes lower still if you're able to buy higher capacity, 12-20 TB drives can dip a little bit lower, but if you're into storage, there's pros and cons about higher capacity magnetic (slow) drives and rebuild times.

Not bad, I just bit on the shuckable bestbuy deal last week: $330 all in for the Seagate 16tb so I'm set for a while.

Any issues with noise? I'm reading that these are noisier compared to the 8TB or 12TB Red Plus drives.

To each their own, I've got roughly 230 TB of storage between my Unraid Server, NAS, and the storage in my primary rig.

I personally wouldnt do 10$/TB for these WD red 'plus' drives. To me, the 'plus' indicates that you'll need this hard drive 'plus' a real hard drive. This thing is good for long term, infrequent access storage and nothing else.

They are CMR drives, so what is your complaint exactly?

FWIW they work fine in a NAS

I find the noise of spinning rust, especially when accessing, quite annoying, even if relatively quiet, so I've got them tucked away in my rack in the basement. The fans of the rack drown out the drives. :)

Personally holding out for a smoking Red Pros deal due to the 3 vs 5 year warranty difference vs the Red Plus. I think it's worth a price uplift, regardless of increased noise.

I've been casually shopping around for a decent HDD for my PC as my current 3tb shucked drive from 2014 is starting to die. I use it for media, VM's and some games.

I found a post on RFD from Nov 2021, where this drive was on sale for $250, so either that wasnt a great deal, or relatively speaking this is an ok deal considering inflation and a lower price.

Wow. What is the bitrate do you capture videos? Even at 20Mbps, 7TB is equivalent to (7*10^12)/((20*10^6)/8)/3600/24=32.4 days of footage.

Yeah this is an OK deal. Magic number is still $20/tb. In Jan I think the 14tb red plus was $240ish with coupon which was ATL. Prior to that last year there were external shuckable drives that were $260ish which is decent. Hopefully those prices return soon. BB has a 14tb external drive for $299 which hopefully isn't the new norm.

There is no single answer. We're talking about all the photos and videos I've taken since getting my first digital camera, plus digitized home movies from the VHS/VHS-C days (I still have the tapes, but wanted a digital copy to preserve them).

There's lots of photos shot in RAW in there, along with both the source videos and edited videos I've made over the years creating the 'modern' home movie.

These days most of my shooting is on our iPhones @ 4K60, which is around 50Mpbs after a quick Google search.

Note I NEVER transcode, I keep the original file no matter it's format since any transcoding of a lossy format results in a generational loss, which I don't want. Is it REALLY that important for some old 640x480 video content? No, but then that content isn't that big anyways.

It adds up, and given how little money it takes to store it (and have multiple backups, one in a safety deposit box), I find it worth it.
