I can't speak for Astraweb, but I've always been satisfied with Newsgroup Direct.

these guys are highwinds resellers which apparently has some moral issues, and some of the fastest takedowns in the business..they also seem to have monthly TB sales for $42 (terrabyte tuesday).

i was under the impression astraweb's better than hw, but i've also seem people complain that astraweb's going downhill these days

I've used AstraWeb for over 10 years, and it was great. But over the past few months, I've been seeing more and more incompletes. I download headers from Astraweb, select the file, and it says it's not on the server. The problem has occurred from time to time over the years, but this time it's been ongoing for about four months. Normally it would affect the US server farm, and you could get the postings from the European servers, or vice versa, but now it's affecting both concurrently.

I'd avoid Astraweb until they get that issue fixed. Unfortunately, there doesn't appear to be much urgency shown in getting it fixed.

I looked at the various competitors (http://www.newsgroupreviews.com/best-usenet.html), and decided on NewsHosting.

I can't speak about NewsgroupDirect, but after a month with NewsHosting, I'm delegating Astraweb to a backup server only. So far, Newshosting has all of the postings that are missing on Astraweb (although there was one repost group on Astraweb that's not on Newshosting, oddly enough). It's about the same price ($US99/yr versus $US96/yr), same speed, much better completion. And they have their own download utility. I thought it was just a gimmick, but I was surprised to find it's actually extremely useful for finding postings from three years ago. Instead of checking three different NZB search engines to try to find a subtitles file for a Japanese tv show that I downloaded in 2013, their tool searches their server on the back end, and gives back results instantly.

Sorry to sound like a commercial, but if you're comparing Astraweb vs X, I'd give X the nod at the moment.

Astraweb has been doing auto-takedowns for quite some time. They're not going to get better.

Highwinds, meh. Evil conglomerate with U.S. servers subject to DMCA.

All-Dutch is the only way to go, now.

As someone who has used both, here's why I would recommend NGD:

1. Astraweb has been very unreliable lately
2. NGD has performed decently for me for over 3 years. Haven't had any issues whatsoever.

I had Astraweb for a few years but like 2 years ago. I found that I was using a fill server quite often. Then I moved to Newsdemon=Highwinds and never touched my block account for 18 months. I recently tried Supernews but the rate of missing articles was enough to make it useless. So I'm sticking with Newsdemon even though I'm paying $13/month. NGD should give the same experience. I'm also finding lately that there is more frequency of encrytped headers due to the DMCA scourge. This means I have to hunt down the "secret" NZB clubs to get what I want.

I got in on the Terabyte Tuesday a few weeks ago at $40 so I'm good to go.

NGD has worked great for me. But this deal is not that great. I got a 2TB block for $60 2 years ago.

500 GB for 25 bucks is a great deal. Sure, not quite as good as 2 TB for $60, but if you download 20 GB a month like me then this is better.

Yeah. The main reason I quoted that one was because it had a comprehensive list of ten of the biggest hosts. Most of the real review sites only cover one or maybe two of them.

For most downloading or uploading files. Anything and everything from movies to music. More secure than torrenting in that you are down loading directly and not involved in a torrent hive where your isp is visible, unless of course you are using a vpn or proxy.
