Usenet is kind of like an alternative to torrents for downloading things. There are some free options for providers and indexers if you want to give it a try.

Since 6box went down haven't found any really good free ones though. Might not be looking at the right places.

Reddit has a sub that breaks down indexers and fees and memberships for most popular ones. There's only a couple dozen worth mentioning these days. Generally the better they are the less likely you'll even be able to sign up much less pay less for the service. If you get hydra setup you can add a bunch of free ones (limited accounts) and likely stay under the hit/download limits they impose and not have any failures from takedowns.

Based on this it seems like this isn’t worth it then - is that fair?

Still have 1TB prepaid, but cannot even use it since the free indexers are crap... wasted too much time signing up for loser ones and finding out there's not much in there... c'est la vie ...
