This is the first time I've heard of someone in Canada actually going to court for downloading a torrent. I usually just get a email (maybe a couple times a year tops) from my provider warning me, but never with an actual charge.

Either way, signed up for NewsDemon in USD using PayPal and linked to my Rogers MC - let's see what the final charge will be.

Lack of VPN (or usenet), clearly, so he wasn't on the ball. Hopefully the movie he downloaded was Big Buck Bunny and he'll be cleared for a big buck misunderstanding soon ;).

What should I do if I joined through NewsDemon?

Refund request?
Use it for VPN (even though it's not the best)?
Suggestions please?
Look for a decent deal on a VPN and do some research on them, if that's your intent. Express VPN probably one of the best, but they never really have any great "deals"
Personally, I don't care for VPNs other than for location purposes, where I can get a great deal on software, or gaming subscription, by using a different location (example: I got 2.5 years of XBL Ultimate for approx. $60 using a Brazilian VPN). But for this purpose, I can just use a free VPN with limited banwith

The price never goes up for your or their lifetime as long as you don't cancel your account.

No idea what you can do with NewsDemon and never heard of its VPN.

3 friends and I share Torguard and love it.

Slick would do for torrenting (a linux distro would take quite a while to download over any VPN but would be a safe method to do so). Getting usenet working correctly would be ideal thanks to automation, of course, but if you wanted a VPN for relatively cheap PIA can be had for around $2.69 US a month currently if you buy 2 years upfront with a bonus extra 2 months (14 months total for $69.95 US = $2.69 US per month):

https://www.privateinternetaccess.com/pages/buy-vpn/

They're based in the US but don't log so not really an issue unless you communicate with dissidents, etc. They're about as fast as a VPN can get and have servers worldwide. I'm sure there are other VPN deals as well if that's all you're looking for.

Elrondolio wrote: You're welcome. I wrote a little primer on usenet a while back for someone else and, as you're new, thought I might repost it here. There are a lot of useful videos on Youtube that can help you out as well. All the best.

Think of Usenet as basically a massive "forum" system with tons of "forum" topics, but usually not accessed via a web browser (although it can be). Usenet service has been around since the very beginning of the internet and was absolutely integral to its growth. Today usenet "forums" number in the hundreds of thousands. Usenet has "forums" not just for simple and rich text discussion, but for posting all kinds of binaries such as software and media: some very much legal content and some very grey or dark area content. A person purchases a monthly or yearly subscription to usenet services like NewsDemon (or this topic's UsenetPrime service) to gain access to this massive "forum" system. Most people who use usenet want a main monthly or yearly usenet service they subscribe to but also purchase a few other blocks of data at a flat-rate from other usenet companies and sources that provide postings from other segments of usenet, or backbones - this increases the ability to "see" all available posts to usenet and fills in the gaps in postings from just one service provider. Because usenet is so massive and unwieldy to browse and use manually (although again. possible): a person also subscribes to one or more of whats called indexers such as NZBGeek, Dog NZB, NZB Planet, etc. Think of indexers like the behind the scenes google service or other back-end search engines: indexers provide the ability to easily search for postings, software and media on usenet. Finally usenet users would most likely install software that actually connects to usenet services and downloads what are called nzb files... equivalent to a .torrent file in some senses. Such downloading software used for this purpose: nzbget or sabnzbd, etc.

So in two paragraphs that is the basics of usenet. Its a bit complicated to learn and setup but not too difficult. It can also get somewhat pricey with all the different services one might want (including a VPN subscription - although this is often provided "free" with a monthly or yearly usenet provider such as NewsDemon and isn't really necessary as usenet servers are SSL encrypted) but the results are unmatched: automated, hands off access to the worlds collection of media, software and hundreds of thousands of discussions galore.

Good luck.
Last time I used newsnet was over 8 years ago. I found lots of viruses and malware. Hence why I moved over to legit torrent sites. Has this been fixed on newsgroups?

A couple things to unpack from that reply. First: there are no legit torrent sites. Period. Sure, there are some invite only sites that provide tracking for quality torrents but when it comes to viruses and malware? Everywhere. Don't be lulled into a false sense of security from them based on where you source them. Torrents are no different than any other software delivery service: you get what's packed, malware and viruses included.

As for finding viruses and malware on usenet.. sure, of course. No different than any other torrent tracker, IRC server, FTP server, etc, etc that you find on the internet. It's just a delivery service... what's on it is as varied as those who use it.

I guess it comes down to *how* you use torrent sites, usenet or Microsoft's FTP servers alike... use the correct software and be sure to wear an internet condom whatever you do (MalwareBytes, etc). So, in summation: there is nothing to be "fixed" on usenet... just how one uses it. Hope that helps.

Thanks OP, gonna hop on this deal, I was with newsdemon for many years on a monthly account, I then put myself on vacation mode as I wasn't using it much then when I wanted to activate it back they removed my monthly deal, I also didn't enjoy using their SlickVPN.

Was just looking at my NewsDemon subscription from back in May. I paid $15 for 2 years, with a 500GB/month limit. That was a great deal

Thanks for the information. I do know what you're referring to, but I've never had issues with downloading from major torrent sites with confirmed users. With that said I found I could find a lot more viruses on newsgroups, but this was years ago and I am not that well versed in newsgroups. I still remember the days of me trying to download survivor episodes from IRC and music from DC++. Torrents for me is a step up from all those technologies other than music. I find the upvotes, comments and regular users helps to distinguish viruses from good uploads.

Got this last black Friday I think.

Been using newshosting for probably 10 years now. Rock solid, Max out my gigabit connection.

They also allow 2 IPs so shareable if you really want to.

I rarely does torrent these days since the risks are not worth it unless you are on private and there is still no guarantee. Getting an indexer like Drunkenslug is probably the best and I think if you download a lot, it is worth the annual VIP. When I torrent, I ensure my SOCKS5 is on.

I kind of have a good setup with Sabnzbd and Sonar and Transmission working on FreeNAS.

I have sub of Windscribe, Ironsocket, Slick, GetFlix, and Slick is likely my least favorite.

BobyTT wrote: How is NewsDemon compared Frugal for example?
NewsDemon and NewsHosting are excellent Omicron-Highwinds services... long retention, decent completion rates for newer posts and excellent speeds but with DMCA rules. Frugal is interesting as its main servers are Omicron-Highwinds but with less retention however it's bonus server is based in the Netherlands and is based on the Usenet.Farm backbone (with a 1TB monthly limit) and thus has NTD rules. Most usenet users would want a Omicron-Highwinds backup service with either blocks of NTD based Usenet.Farm, TweakNews or others as mains (Eweka would be ideal as a main but expensive and they don't sell blocks).

Frugal kind of gives you two good backbones in one albeit with smaller retention and some transfer limits. Speeds are good but not amazing. I personally use Eweka as my primary with NewsDemon as backup as well as blocks from UsenetExpress and Usenet.Farm resellers. There are a lot of options out here with some good pricing lately. Hope that helps.

Those of you that want to give Usenet a try, here is a small package to get you started for "free":

- NNTP Downloader (software) = NZBGET https://nzbget.net/
- TV Searcher (software) = Sonarr https://github.com/Sonarr/Sonarr
- Movie Searcher (software) = Radarr https://github.com/Radarr/Radarr
- Indexer (service) = https://abnzb.com/ (Free tier with daily limit of 25 downloads and 10 API calls)
- Usenet Content (service) = https://xsusenet.com/ (Free tier with 25 GB download monthly, slow 2 mbit, and no SSL)

Joker that voted down this deal as "not a good price"... tsk tsk
