Nexgard Spectra alternatives

So we have a 5 month old pup, and our vet suggested we give him Nexgard Spectra. Seems this stuff does everything (worms, ticks, fleas, parasites, heart worms, makes my coffee in the morning ) Any alternatives to this (ie ...cheaper)? He doesn't weigh that much (25lbs) and it's like 45$/pill/month. I want the best for my best friend, but I'm also an RFDer, so looking for something more affordable. My last dog was on revolution which seemed not as expensive (also read somewhere on here an OTC that was almost identical to revolution)

Revolution or Simparica Trio.

Or Bravecto (need to wait until pup is 6 months old - it does fleas and ticks and is used once every 3 months) + a deworming medication like Interceptor Plus which you would need to give monthly.

From what I recall Nexgard Spectra is a little more expensive than other comparable products.

Revolution won't cover the species of tick that causes lyme disease ( deer tick ) . There's a newer Revolution external solution available called Revolution Plus that contains selamectin (original ingredient) and also contains sarolener ( the Simparica ingredient ) , which will cover fleas, ticks, and heartworm.

ur_too-crazy - you don't mention the type of dog that you have. If short haired a topical med such as Revolution Plus will work but if your dog is a double coated with lots of long hair I suggest that you use a chewable. One year everything that our vet carried was topical as per the OVMA and shortages of other meds. The next year the OVMA said that dogs with double coats should be given a chewable because by the time you part the hair/fur to the pink skin (and many don't - we did) the dog did not receive all of the dose because some was in the dog's coat. And if it is raining, you have to wait until it stops. The best time to apply a topical if your dog is short haired is after the last nightly walk that way rain won't be a factor. But I MUCH preferred the chewable (a treat for the dogs who are hoovers) and it was a lot easier to administer.

Our dog also weighed 25 lbs. - and was a double-coated dog with a ton of thick hair.

We were using Bravecto but our vet switched us to Nextgard Spectra. We did not have an issue with remembering to give the Bravecto every 3 months, but hey the Nextgard was a "treat" every month. Simparica is much more common in Toronto now - before not so much - I asked.

You can consider Heartgard Plus and Bravecto combined. Heartgard covers heartworm, hookworms and roundworms I believe and Bravecto covers fleas and ticks I believe. Heartgard used to be combined with Nexgard (same maker)

Simparica Trio and Nexgard spectra covers all of the above and hookworms and roundworms.

Revolution covers hookworms, roundworms, heartworms, fleas and ticks (not as much tick species compared to Trio and Spectra.

There is also Advantage Multi and Advantix II (OTC - can be purchased at petsmart)

You can ask your doctor to write you a prescription (usually $15-$25) and get a prescription from thepetpharmacist.ca

However, its close to end of the season (3 more doses left) so it may not be worth getting a prescription for the 3 months unless you save the doses for next year (won't work if its a growing puppy).

Simparica Trio and Nexgard Spectra both have online rebates if you purchase 6 doses. I believe $20 for Trio and $15 for Spectra.
