Because it wasn't obvious for me when I went, I'll put this out there: You will be expected to collect your luggage and go through customs/ and security all over again.
3 hours is enough, but ORD is massive, and lines can be super long.
I have done this before on an even shorter connection time. (About an hour and a half). It’s do-able. We had no check in luggage so we went to a faster line as I recall. Actually it was super quick but I think it was an outlier. 3 hours is plenty.

Edit: I double checked. I had exactly 2 hours and had time to spare. This was in March 2017 (ANA flight operated by United)

Don't you preclear US customs in Pearson?

3hours 14mins layover in ORD good enough to make for connecting flight?
I had a ANA/United flight from HND to ORD to YYZ and it went super quick, but that’s my own experience. We did need to check our luggage again, but there was a line after picking it up (right at the exit of the baggage claim area) for us to recheck it. It wasn’t like we had to go out and then join the lines that locals were getting into. One thing to note, though this is probably more airline dependent is that we had to change terminals IIRC and needed to take a monorail/train to do so. Still the whole thing didn’t take long. I believe we arrived st ORD on a weekday morning.

Yes, I did. That was the website in the link. Didn't read much into the details in the nextdeparture post other than the dates though

Did you get your booking reference code from the Airlines? Can you pick your own seats?

Yes.
On the way back from Japan I mean.
I expected the luggage to be transferred since my entire itinerary was with the same airline.
