Nikon d600 vs d700

If I want to buy an entry level full frame camera to play around, which is better buy? D600/d610 or d700? They are pretty cheap now. Like 400-500 dollars in kijiji

Thanks

The D600 had dust and oil spot issues. The D700 is a 13+ year old 12.1 meg camera. The D610 is the only one of the three worth while for that price.

Do you already have nikon glass?
If so, you'll want to make sure that it's FX and not DX lenses you have. If you use a DX lens on a full frame camera, you'll have substantial crop on your photos (The D610 goes from a 24 to a 10mp camera)

Just to add -> Having owned a D600 that developed oil spot issues (always had dust issues) after Nikon replaced the shutter (didn't ask them to but they did it 'just in case'), I would be concerned with any D600 that was serviced as well since the replacement part did not fix the issue with oil spots. Also, even if the seller stated that they had no issues with oil spots (which may be the case), there really is no way to verify it unless you shoot a couple of hundred exposures and looked at the sensor before and after doing so. That's how I detected my oil spots when my D600 was returned to me after the shutter replacement.

I've used both the D700 and the D600. The D600 is a much newer camera and as such has the typical feature improvements one would expect - higher resolution. better quality sensor in all respects, faster processor which results in faster-focusing speed, longer battery life... The D700 while much older has a kind of cult-like following due to the image quality. Yes, the resolution is much lower and the sensor is much older but I would say that the results in terms of colour are better. While the D600 needs a bit of tweaking to get the colours to my taste, the D700 just comes out much like my D780 today.

There are also differences in the user interface. If you are used to higher-end Nikon bodies, the D700's layout is much more familiar and easier to transition into and out of. The D600 has a more mid/high user interface so the controls may be more familiar to those upgrading.

So d700 is a better choice?

Depends on what YOU want to do with it. As I don't know your use case nor your situation, I can't answer that for you.

It's more for concert and indoor sports.

Then that's a different story. You want low light performance and that comes from the D600's newer sensor. Check out this performance comparison between the D600 and the D700 sensor - https://www.dxomark.com/Cameras/Compare ... ___441_834. Notice how the D600 performs better in low light conditions in terms of the image sensor. The AF performance in low light may be the issue in concerts, however.

I have the D700 and the D610. D700 has much better build quality, but is getting very old, and 12 MP is limiting, no cropping.

D610 is still a great camera with 24 MP and the low light performance is actually pretty similar to the more expensive D750.

D700 tended to be used heavily by pros so used ones will have high shutter counts and a lot of wear and tear. D610 was a popular amateur camera so it's easy to find excellent condition, low shutter count bodies. Try to find one with the kit lens 24-85 which is small and light and pretty good and sells very cheaply.

So D610 any day over D700. I would avoid D600 due to oil spot issues as mentioned.

Both cameras suck for video, if you care about video go mirrorless (Z5 / Z6 etc.) - at much higher prices.

Hey I bought a used D700 for $400 on Kijiji recently. I am smitten. Absolutely in love with it and I’ve taken a good deal of portraits since with my 50mm and the Tokina 100mm macro. Mine had less than 20000 actuations :)

There are a lot of low mileage D700s out there actually as you found out. There are tons of people out there who literally buy the best camera they can afford (and some can afford a good bit of money) and use it for vacation shots while taking good care of it.

The D700 is a beautiful camera. I have 2, and a D3s. If you don't need to crop heavily or print extremely large photos then they're still very capable. I can't believe you guys are seeing them for $400 wow. Must grab another.

My opinion: It's worth the extra $200 for a D610 over D700 due to the much higher resolution and greatly improved dynamic range. It's also nice being able to use SD cards vs CF. Pay attention to who used the camera and where it was used, try to avoid buying bodies that were used frequently outdoors or for event shooting.

Prices have really fallen on Nikon DSLR gear and I've seen D4 bodies under $1000 these days.

I bought the D700. For me the larger pixels (better low light performance) compensated for the lower resolution.

Yes but the dynamic range of D700 is inferior vs D610. Nevertheless they are all great cameras.

Agreed, the D700 won't hold a candle to more modern cameras in a lot of respects, but I'm still happy with it. I also can't let go of a D40 which I love as a travel camera.
